Learning outcomes

At the end of the seminar, the student has a basic knowledge of univariate and bivariate statistical analysis and develops the skills to use statistical software. In particular, the student will be able to: - set the collection of data through questionnaires; - Perform simple analyses on survey data using Excel; - present data in graphs and tables; - discuss the results of those analyses.

Course contents

This course offers a methodological introduction and a practical guide to the use of one of the most popular software (Excel) that allow to perform basic quantitative analysis (frequencies, cross tabulations) and visualize them through appropriate graphical tools.

Students should already be well-versed in sociological / political science methodology and basic elements of statistics.

The text can be replaced by

Material that can be freely accessed on-line and slides used in class (which can be downloaded from "Virtuale" website).

 

 

Teaching methods

Lectures. Practical exercises on data analysis and survey guided by the teacher.

Assessment methods

Participation in class is compulsory and attendance will be recorded. Presence in at least 70% of classes is required.

Participation will be assessed in terms of attendance, active interaction, and homework fulfilment.

During the last class, students will take a written exam aimed at evaluating their knowledge of basic notions of methodology, their ability to perform statistical analyses of survey data using Excel and to present the results of those analyses in graphs and tables.

The final grade is given by active participation in the lessons and the grade achieved in the final exam.

If students do not pass this exam or reject the final grade, they can take the exam as non-attending students in any regular session starting from January 2023. To take the exam, students have to sign up on Almaesami.
