Learning outcomes

Students who complete this course will have gained knowledge of the key concepts, issues and methods in the study of music from an anthropological point of view. On successful completion of this course a student will be able to: acquire an in-depth knowledge of specific musical practices and traditions; assess the role of music in public and private ritual contexts; analyse the forms, structures and meanings of music, as well as the musical instruments in the contexts examined; develop skills in critically analysing audiovisual materials and sources of different types; deepen some issues related to fieldwork.

Course contents

The course focuses on the relationship between music, ritual and gender in Morocco and within the broader cultural contexts of the Maghreb and North Africa. Drawing on historical, ethnographic and ethnomusicological sources, the course offers an overview of the cult of saints, religious brotherhoods and spirit possession cults. Specific attention is given to women’s ritual and musical practices and the relationship between music and gender identity.

Teaching methods

Formal lectures with audio-visual support.

Assessment methods

Oral exam to assess the critical and methodological skills acquired by the student. Elements contributing to the evaluation include detailed knowledge of the book's content, property of language, and especially the capacity of organizing the information showing expositive and critical skills.

A complete and appropriate knowledge, rich discursive articulation and proper language, and the ability to make connections between the books’ content will be assessed as excellent.

A complete and adequate knowledge, well-articulated and correctly expressed will be assessed as a very good.

A more than satisfactory knowledge, well-expressed, will be evaluated as good.

An essential knowledge, but not always accurately expressed, will be considered sufficient.

Students with general but superficial knowledge, simply acceptable expressions, and significant gaps in articulation will be assessed as barely adequate/poor.

The exam is failed if students do not demonstrate to master the learning outcomes of the course and show inappropriate language, lack of orientation in the discipline.
