Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will achieve fundamental knowledge in the subjects of agronomy and crop science, concerning a representative group of herbs and medicinal plants grown in temperate climate. More specifically, the student will be able to understand and deliberate choices of crop management in plant species aimed for different end uses (aromatic, dyeing, cosmetic, medicinal, nutraceutic, textile and agro-functional) with due awareness.

Course contents

Principles of Agronomy: crop plants cycle and requirements; climate and soil; soil tillage; fertilization; multiplication and planting; cropping cares; irrigation and drainage; weed control; protection from pests and diseases. Cultivation of herbs and medicinal plants: origin and diffusion; botanical description; crop husbandry of a representative group of species (Marigold, German chamomile, Jerusalem artichoke, Lavender and lavendin, Liquorice, Peppermint, Sage, Ergot, Mustard, Saffron).

Teaching methods

The teaching is based on lessons supported by the display of slides and visual presentations. External activites might be organized, in case of relevant events (conferences, etc.) taking place during the course.

Assessment methods

Learning is assessed through a final exam evaluating the knowledge and skills acquired in an oral test of ca. 15-20 minutes, or 25-30 minutes if both modules of the Integrated Course are jointly assessed.

Teaching tools

Blackboard, video-projector, personal computer, web access. All lectures are supported by PowerPoint slides.
