37467 - Stratigraphy and Sedimentology

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Geological Sciences (cod. 8015)

Learning outcomes

To provide basic concepts in stratigraphy and sedimentology. To develop an integrated approach to outcrop description and interpretation including: construction of stratigraphic and sedimentological logs, outcrop description by line drawings, identification and interpretation of major sedimentary structures in outcrop.

Course contents

The concept of 'bed', 'facies' and 'sedimentary body'. Processes of transport and sedimentary structures. Depositional environments, with special emphasis on fluvial, deltaic, littoral, (siliciclastic and carbonate) shelf, deep-marine and evaporitic systems. 3D-analysis of sedimentary bodies. Stratigraphic concepts. Unconformities. Dating and correlation techniques. Cyclic events in stratigraphy. Lithostratigraphy, allostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy.
