Learning outcomes
The student knows the basic tools (grammar books, dictionaries and corpora) and basic translation methods (for the analysis of a source text and its transfer into a target text). S/he is able to apply these instruments and methods to the task of translating a variety of simple texts from and into English. S/he is able to identify and use the most adequate basic translation strategies, depending on the communicative functions of the texts to be translated.
Course contents
Students will be introduced to a variety of text genres (literary texts, medical/scientific semi-specialised texts, journalistic texts) and will develop an understanding of the translation challenges posed by each genre. They will be asked to analyse the source texts, identify their intended readership and consider different translation strategies and solutions. They will also develop their competence in editing and revising translated texts.

Students will be asked to analyse and translate text extracts in class and as homework. Their translations will be compared and discussed in peer assessment mode.
Assessment methods
Assessment is by written examination. Students will be asked to translate two short texts, using bilingual and monolingual dictionaries.
