Knowledge outcomes

After completing this course, the student will attain applied knowledge and clinical reasoning skills about peripheral nervous system disorders and motor neurons degenerative diseases, pertaining physiotherapy treatment, assessment and planning appropriate rehabilitative exercises too.

 Program / Content

General Elements of neuroanatomy of the Peripheral Nervous System

 

· CLASSIFICATION OF PNS DISEASES: topographic: mono-, multi- or polyneuropathy; qualitative: Neurapraxia, neurotmesis, axonotmesis; Principles of axonal regeneration

 · SEMEIOLOGY AND ETIOLOGY of PNS neurolesions ( motor and sensitive semiotics)

 · INSTRUMENTAL DIAGNOSTICS: Electromyography; Intensity/Duration Curve; Myelin speed conduction.

 · SEMEIOTICS OF CRANIAL NERVES: principles of semiotics related to pathology of VII and VIII cranial nerves

 · CRANIAL NERVES DESEASES AND REHABILITATION: clinical indications and rehabilitation

 · CERVICAL SPINE AND BRACHIAL PLEXUS DISORDERS CONCERNING REHABILITATION

The brachial plexus anatomy review: roots, collateral and terminal branches

Sensitive and motor nerves territory of the cervical roots: upper extremity myotomes and dermatomes

Brachial plexus terminal branches assessment: mobilization of the nervous system, OTR, their course and palpation, orthopedic Tests and Tinel Test

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: description, assessment (Adson, Eden, Wright tests), clinical indications and treatment principles

· LUMBOSACRAL SPINE AND PLEXUS DISORDERS CONCERNING REHABILITATION

The lumbosacral plexus anatomy review: roots, collateral and terminal branches

Sensitive and motor nerves territory of the lumbosacral roots: myotomes, dermatomes

Lumbosacral plexus terminal branches assessment: mobilization of the nervous system, OTR, their course and palpation, orthopedic tests, Straight leg raising test, Wasserman test

Focus on discopathy and hernia; canal narrowing spine

· THE NEUROVEGETATIVE NERVOUS SYSTEM: parasympathetic, sympathetic and metasympathetic nervous system

Semeiotics of the neurovegetative nervous system: main clinical correlations concerning physiotherapy

· Polyneuropathy: Guillain-Barre Syndrome: etiology, clinical course (prodromal phase, extension, status and recovery), assessment (motor and sensitive signs), physiotherapy indications and rehabilitation devices and equipment

·  DEGENERATIVE HEREDITARY NEUROPATHIES: Charcot Marie-Tooth; Dejerine Sottas. Etiology and physiotherapy indications

· THE VIRAL NEUROPATHIES: Poliomyelitis: etiology and rehabilitation treatment

· Principles of physiotherapy treatment of the peripheral nerve injuries: recovery and maintenance of muscle trophism; recovery of sensitive components. Therapeutic exercises, neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), proprioceptive exercises, occupational therapy and rehabilitation devices, orthesis, devices, etc.

 · UPPER AND LOWER MOTOR NEURON DESEASE: ALS: etiology, symptoms, differential diagnosis, the ALSSS scale, rehabilitation
