Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will know how to intepret the characterisitcs of the contemporary city, with particiular reference to the new challenges of urban and rural contexts. The student will know the main available tools and methods to understand, plan and desing the urban and rural areas, aiming at improving the quality of life and the wellbeing of the citizens both in urban and rural areas.
Course contents
Introduction to the course: urban challenges, SDGs and cities, etc.
Planning in a changing society, but how the society is changing?
Urban and rural development and regeneration
Urban regeneration and urban planning tools
New city paradigms: resilient city, circular city, creative city, health city, liquid city, smart/ augmented city
Risk assessment and management - a look at diverse natural hazard and mitigation and adaptation strategies
The design of the city to enhance sustainable mobility: multimodality, seamless mobility, bicycle and pedestrian mobility
Affordable housing, social housing and housing policies in Europe
Cultural and Natural Heritage as a driver for regeneration and resilience
Sustainable Tourism for inclusive local development
Workshop/seminar on EU project development: how to embed sustainable urban planning principles into a new project proposal
Readings/Bibliography
