Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to acquire the basic information on the processes of the internationalization of the fashion system, focusing on the different phases, project, manufacturing, distribution and consumption. Through the examination of the main characteristics of the contemporary textile-clothing sector, the student is able to frame the structural and cultural dynamics characterizing the globalization of the fashion system.

Course contents

The course addresses the basic concepts for an understanding of the globalisation of fashion: the evolution of the Eurocentric model and the different diffusion of fashion around the world; the material and immaterial productions of fashion; the evolution of the luxury sector; 'ethnic' fashion and cultural appropriation; the contribution of animals in fashion production and representation.

29 MARCH Silvia Gambi presents her film 'Stracci' (rags). At the centre of the documentary are 'stracci', that is, used wool clothes, an inexhaustible resource for textile production in Prato, where the potential of recycling was understood long before the talk of sustainability and circularity.

5 APRIL Federica Fornaciari presents her book "Archiviare la moda". Fashion archives preserve the products of a brand, and are a strategic tool that communicates the product, the heritage. Preserving products whose use is closely linked to production needs differs from preserving a cultural asset. And the specificity of the fashion archive, to preserve in order to contribute to the production of new consumer goods.

Assessment methods

The examination consists of a written examination with multiple-choice tests based on the examination texts.
Depending on the number of entrants, there may be specific assessment requirements for those attending, which will be communicated in due course.
