Learning outcomes

According with UN 2030 SDG n. 11, our cities and human settlements have to become more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Better urban planning and management are needed to make the world’s urban spaces more inclusive, The aim of this course is the design of more sustainable, inclusive, low-energy-environmental-friendly architectures, able to couple excellent formal quality and coherence with high functional performances and comfort levels, by producing the minimum impact on the natural resources all along the building life cycle, promoting urban resilience tools and approaches.

Course contents

Introduction to the course: climate change, urban challenges, SDGs and cities, etc.

Planning in a changing climate, but how is the climate changing?

Climate and environmental justice, emergency and crisis 

Ecosystem services, Green and Blue Infrastructure and Nature Based solutions in planning; 

Greening the city and Nature Based Solutions for climate adaptation and mitigation

Planning adaptation and regeneration in diverse environments: coastal areas, rural environment and mountainous areas

Planning adaptation in small islands

Energy planning and energy transition: energy efficiency of the built environment and low-carbon mobility

Scenario planning for resilient future

Readings/Bibliography

Slide will be distributed to students as main reference material.

Specific content will be shared through from scientific articles.

Additional material will be provided to the students such as books media article or podcasts

Teaching methods

The course will include both traditional class and interactive workshops with the students. Group work may be developed to support peer to peer learning and exchange.

There will be an oral exam at the end of the course
