Learning outcomes

Knowledge of general mechanisms underlying human diseases: natural and acquired immunity, neoplastic transformation, hemodynamic disorders.

Course contents

Aims and methods of general pathology

Natural immunity

Acute inflammation: exudate formation; fagocytosis. Chronic inflammatory reactions. Tissue repair.

Acquired immunity

Antibodies and humoral immunity. Breast feeding and immune protection of the newborn. Cell-mediated immune reactions. Hypersensitivity reactions.

Neoplastic transformation

Characteristics of neoplastic tissues. Metastatic dissemination. Carcinogens. Cancer epidemiology. Breast feeding as a protective factor against breast cancer.

Assessment methods

The final exam will be conducted orally and will aim to verify the achievement of educational objectives; more specifically, it will assess the student's knowledge of the basic mechanisms through which human diseases are generated. The student will be asked to discuss in depth one of the topics covered during the teaching course.

The final grade of the “Microbiology and Pathology” course is the average of the grades obtained in the tests of General Pathology, Microbiology and Clinical Pathology.
