Learning outcomes

By the end of the course module the student should know the basic themes of statistics either from a methodological and an applied perspective. In particular, the student should be able to: - summarize statistical data using distributions and graphs - select and compute the most appropriate summary statistics (mean values and variability measures) - measure the strength of the association between two characters observed on the same set of units.

Course contents

During the course the following topics will be addressed 

·  Statistical units and variables

·  The concept of natural variation

·  Quantitative and qualitative data

·  Observed and relative frequencies

·  Statistical distributions

·  Mean values (mode, median, quantiles, arithmetic, harmonic, geometric, quadratic mean)

·   Variability measures (range, interquartile range, deviance, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variability, Gini's ratio)

·  Graphical representations of data

·  Relationship between two characters

·   Measures of independence in distribution and independence on average

·  Simple linear regression and correlation; R2

Assessment methods

The Statistics I course is part of the Integrated course Statistics and Probability.

The course Statistics and Probability consists in a written and an oral assessment.

The written assessment lasts 2 hours and is composed of two parts related to Statistics and Probability respectively. For the Statistics written assessment the student is required to solve exercises related to both Univariate and Bivariate situations. The test is closed book. The student con use the formula sheet that is provided on Virtuale and a pocket calculator only. The mark for the written assessment will be the average of the mark in Statistics and the mark in Probability.

The oral assessment involves questions on the theory of both Statistics and Probability. Only the students who have passed the written exam can sit the oral one. Students can take the written exam in one sitting and the oral exam in a different one.

Students who regularly attend classes have the possibility to split the written exam in two parts. They can take the written exam for Statistics I by enrolling on Almaesami for Statistics and probability written exam (I parziale). Only those who pass can take the written exam for Probability I by enrolling on Almaesami for Statistics and probability written exam (II parziale + totale). In case they pass both partial exams, they can sit the oral. In case a student has passed the partial for Statistics I but fails Probability I he must take the Total exam.

A Mock exam will be proposed during the last class and published with solution on Virtuale afterwards. Past exams will be made available on Virtuale.
