Paola Mattarelli

Associate Professor at the University of Bologna, she conducts research on bacterial groups belonging to the genus Bifidobacterium and on lactic acid bacteria from taxonomic, ecological, physiological, and applied perspectives. Her research activities also focus on the study of microbiota in a variety of animal and agricultural habitats. In addition, she investigates the antimicrobial and microbiota-modulating properties of essential oils and hydrolates.

She is the author of the chapters on the family Bifidobacteriaceae in both Bergey’s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology and The Prokaryotes. She collaborates with several European research institutes and is a member of the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology and Systematic and Applied Microbiology.
