Exam Information for English 1 and English 2 – ARCO Curriculum, DiSCi Department (A.Y. 2024/25 and Prior Years)

📌 English 1 Exam (Lingua Inglese 1)

The exam consists of two parts:

1. ORAL Exam

Required readings:

  • The Speckled People – Hugo Hamilton (2003)

  • Interpreter of Maladies – Jhumpa Lahiri (1999)

The oral exam (approx. 15 minutes) includes:

  • 2 questions (one in English and one in Italian) on: plot, characters, historical and social context, language, style, symbols, and themes;

  • 1 translation task (ENG → IT) based on a short excerpt taken from the readings.

📑 Assessment Rubric – English 1 Oral Exam

1. Knowledge and understanding of the texts
Demonstrates thorough and accurate knowledge of the works (plot, characters, themes, historical-cultural context). Able to situate excerpts within the overall work and the author’s background.

2. Ability to analyse and provide critical commentary
Analyses language, style, symbols, and key themes with coherent and personal arguments. Connects the texts to broader issues (identity, migration, memory, language, etc.).

3. Personal reflection and re-elaboration
Offers relevant and original reflections; avoids mechanical repetition; shows awareness of the literary and cultural significance of the texts.

4. Use of English
Fluent and accurate expression; appropriate vocabulary for literary criticism; cohesion and precision in commentary and translation.

5. Translation and linguistic comprehension of the passage
Produces an accurate translation, demonstrating awareness of lexical and syntactic choices, register, tone, and semantic nuances.

6. Clarity, coherence, and interaction
Provides clear and relevant answers; shows active listening; maintains a coherent line of argument even when guided by questions.

2. WRITTEN Exam (only for students who still need to take it)

The written test consists of three multiple-choice exercises:

  • fill in the gaps

  • word formation

  • cloze test

Total: 60 questions – 50 minutes.
Required level: B1–B2.

📌 English 2 Exam

The exam consists of only a written test, structured in a similar way to the English 1 written exam, but with a required level of B2–C1.
