Education and training

Obtained medical degree and license in Medicine and Surgery, in 1991; residency in general surgery in 1997 and, in 2008, Ph.D. in “Causes and Mechanisms of Inflammation in IBD”, at the University of Bologna.

From 1997 to 1998 attended as a Research Fellow the Department of Colorectal Surgery of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (U.S.A.) headed by Prof. V. Fazio and conducted clinical and experimental research activity with a particular focus on IBD surgery. In june 1998 obtained the CCF Outstanding Research Fellow Award “

Technical skills and competences

Excellent proficiency in general surgery, in particular in abdominal procedures both with laparotomic and mininvasive laparoscopic approach. Specialty interests are represented by oncologic surgery and surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Wide experience in the treatment of abdominal carcinomas with a particular attention focus on carcinomas of the small bowel, of the colon-rectum and of the anus and on hereditary polyposis or familial inherited colorectal cancer with a full proficiency in pelvic pouch sphincter preserving procedures.

Long-term experience in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases such as diverticulitis, Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Extensive knowledge in the treatment of patients with Crohn's disease with more than 1200 procedures performed including resective and bowel sparing surgery.

Wide experience in the treatment of patients with Ulcerative Colitis with more than 950 restorative proctocolectomies performed.

Academic teachings and research

Full professor of General Surgery at the University of Bologna with different teachings in Medical School and in Medical Residencies ( attachment 1)

Professor and tutor in many refresher courses focused on treatment of IBD for surgeons and gastroenterologists
Long term experience in clinical research in particular focused on surgery of inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer whit almost 300 papers published in peer review journals or presented in national or international congresses.(attachment 2)
