International Conference "Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, 1818–2018: Circuits and Circulation"

The Interuniversity Centre for the Study of Romanticism (CISR) and the Department of Languages,
Literatures, and Modern Culture at the University of Bologna, together with Cardiff University, the ERA
(European Romanticisms in Association) network, the British Association for Romantic Studies and the Open University, are sponsoring a two-day conference (20-21 September 2018) to celebrate the bicentenary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in 1818. There will also be a half-day pre-conference on 19 September, aimed at postgraduate and early career researchers.
The conference focuses on the various circuits and connections that have been involved in the circulation of
Frankenstein. Perhaps no literary work has shaped perceptions of literature and science more than
Frankenstein, which has played a pivotal role in Romantic and modern history and culture. An already
substantial body of scholarship on literature and science has enriched and complicated our understanding of Frankenstein in early nineteenth-century culture. Moreover, given that our knowledge of the Romantic
period has grown by leaps and bounds in recent decades, it is high time for a re-evaluation of Shelley’s novel in relation to a number of key contexts: the scientific culture of the time; Shelley’s familial and intellectual circles; gender dynamics; transnational networks; editions; literary sources and models; translations and adaptations. The conference will also consider Frankenstein’s afterlives, together with contemporary critical readings of the text.
