Graduated in Chemistry (Laurea) at the University of Ferrara: summa com laude (1985).

PhD in Analytical and Environmental Sciences at the Department of Chemistry, University of Ferrara.

Academic career

Research assistant in Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry “G. Ciamician”, Faculty of Science, University of Bologna. He obtained tenure in 1995. (2/12/1992 – 10/31/1998).

Associate Professor in Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry “G. Ciamician”, Faculty of Science, University of Bologna. (11/1/98 – 21/10/2003)

Full Professor in Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry “G. Ciamician”, Faculty of Science, University of Bologna. (22/10/2003-present).

Research activity

H-index = 36, i10-index: 97, Citations: > 4000.

Author/co-author of more than 140 papers in international journals of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Clinical Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry of high impact factor, 5 nationally and internationally issued patents, invited author/co-author of 12 book chapters on analytical and bioanalytical chemistry.

Pioneer of Nano/Microparticles Separation Methods and Technologies, among which separation and characterization of nanomaterials are the basis of developments and applications of emerging nanotechnologies, from electronics to biopharma/med technologies such as the nanovector-based delivery of drug/nucleic acids. With his research group and byFlow Srl’s team he has cooperated in many commissioned research contracts with major pharmaceutical players in the field of drug nano-vectorization. With his research group and the teams of the cofounded spinoff companies byFlow Srl and Stem Sel Srl he has cooperated in many commissioned research contracts with major pharmaceutical players in the field of drug nano-vectorization and of cell-based terapies.

Awards

“A. Mangia” Medal 2022, given by the Group of Bioanalytical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry Division, Italian Chemical Society.

As co-founder and CEO of the academic companies byFlow Srl and Stem Sel Srl, he received with their teams the following prizes, awards, and acknowledgments: StartCup Emilia Romagna (2012), GREAT UK-IT Entrepreneurship Award (2012); Prize ROTARY STARTUP DISTRETTO 2072 (2014-2015); Finalist of Premio Marzotto (2014), UniCreditStartLab (2017), and Boost Heroes (2019); “Seal of Excellence” H2020-SME (2016, 2017, 2020). 

International collaboration Projects

Among International Research Projects UE Inco-Copernicus and Galileo 2001, he spent some research periods at the University of Lund (Sweden) and of Limoges (France) collaborating with Prof. K.-G. Wahlund (Lund) e Prof. Ph.P. Cardot (Limoges) ( 1998-2001).

Among Mobility Projects for Technological Transfer between University and Small-Medium Enterprises UE-Leonardo 2000, he spent a research period of two weeks in Sweden collaborating with  SBL Vaccin AB, Solna (November 2000).

Among UE-Leonardo 2001 he spent a research period of two weeks in Sweden collaborating with Pharmacia, Uppsala.

Membership in Scientific Societies

 2001-2003: Board of the Colloid and Interphase Chemistry Interdivisional Group of the Italian Chemical Society.

Board member of the Separation Science Interdivisional Group of the Italian Chemical Society.

Board member of the Proteomic Chemistry  Interdivisional Group of the Italian Chemical Society.

Teaching Activity
More than 30 years of experience in teaching assistance and tenure of courses in the sector of Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry "G. Ciamician".

Technology Transfer and Declination of Research into EnterpriseSince 2009 he has dealt with declination of academic research into enterprise. With the support of the Region's Spinner actions, he was accredited Spinner Consultant of "Company Management." In 2010 he co-founded the academic spinoff byFlow Srl, a service and technology transfer company in the field of technologies and analysis methodologies for nano/biotechnologies, which in 2012 with the project "Stem Sel" won the StartCup 2013, business plan competition of the Region. He is co-founder of Stem Sel® Srl, another spinoff of the University of Bologna.

Coordinator of the Course "FROM IP MANAGEMENT TO TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER FOR BUSINESS" at the Doctoral School in Chemistry of the University of Bologna.

Lecturer in the Life Sciences and MedTech Management Course of the Master in Business Management Life Sciences and MedTech (2022-2023) at the Bologna Business School.
