Higher
Education:
04/1991 to 10/1994 Research
Associate at the University of Lausanne under the supervision of
Prof. C. Floriani.
05/1988 to 01/1989 Laurea (5
years course work, including 13 organic courses and 17 other
courses in chemistry, mathematics, and physics) at the University
of Milan. Undergraduate thesis under the direction of Prof. C.
Gennari.
Work experience
and related subjects:
10/1994 to
2001 Permanent position
as assistant (tenured) professor at the University of Bologna.
2001-2014 Permanent position as associate professor at
Bologna University. The
development of new, enantioselective catalytic reactions through an
extensive knowledge of organic and inorganic literature and through
experimental planning is my principal interest. Self-assembled
chiral catalysts based on calixarenes and BINOL Lewis acid systems
were studied and some promising preliminary results in this area
have been published Titanium tetrafluoride and other inorganic
fluorides was used in our laboratory as precursor of interesting
new catalyst systems, used for example, in enantioselective
catalytic reduction of ketones. Chiral Schiff bases complexes of
group IV transition metals were used in promoting new interesting
high diastereoselective carbon-carbon bond formation reactions.
Chiral Shiff bases metal complexes of Cr, V, Co, In, and Sm were
used in enantioselective mediated redox reactions. With professor
S. Gambarotta (Ottawa) I have investigated the chemistry of
bis-pyrrole and pyrroleBox ligands. The organometallic chemistry of
U, Tm and Sm surrounded by chiral ligands was also explored. With
drs. P. Van der Schaaf, U. Berens, N. End (CIBA) there was have a
strong collaboration in the field of ligands design. One patent was
filed. We have developed a new class of P,N –ligands based on
heterocycle scaffolds (HetPHOX) and PyrPHOX that are cited on Books
(Hartwig textbook). Furthermore, the experience in the fields
allows the design of three different class of BOX ligands that give
really interesting results in catalysis (IMOX, AlcOX). The
formation of quaternary stereocenters with new synthetic
methodologies were also investigated in our laboratory. The first
enantioselective addition of alkynes to ketones was described. We
have developed catalytic enantioselective variant of
Imino-Reformatsky and Reformatsky reactions, and the first
enantioselective addition of diazoacetate to ketones. Recently the
laboratory was shifting the interest in more environmentally
friendly reaction conditions. It was introduced new effective
reaction promoted “on Water” and the chemistry of
SN1-reaction with ferrocenyl alcohols for the
preparation of chiral ligand, starting material for electronics,
was investigated. Through an effective and rewarding European grant
(w.w.w CATAFLU.OR. eu ) we have investigated new stereoselective
organocatalytic reactions. By starting from no experience the group
has introduced a new developing area in catalysis, the
stereoselective SN1-type reactions that are now under
investigations also in organometallic chemistry. Quite new
interesting and highly stereoselective SN1 reactions
were introduced, and these concepts were recently highlighted an
Angewandte Chemie and in Synlett account. Professor Pier Giorgio
Cozzi is active also in the design of ferrocene compounds for
computation through QCA (MolarNet project), use of graphene and
graphene oxide for catalysis, and functionalization of graphite,
gold, ITO, and silica surfaces with tailored molecules for
electronics.
9/2006 to
10/2006 Visiting
professor in the Polytechnique of Hong Kong and SunYatSen
University (QuangZhou, China). I have presented 4 lectures and I
have started new catalytic enantioselective reactions in the field
of alkynylation.
01/ 2003 to
02/2003 Visiting
professor in the institute of Organic Chemistry , University of
Aachen(Germany). I have presented 4 lessons to the Ph.D. student of
the University of Aachen. 1) Chiral Schiff bases: conformations
aggregation and multimetallic activation in catalysis. 2) Design
and synthesis of chiral heterocyclic privileged ligands. 3)
Catalytic enantioselective redox reactions. 3) Organocatalysis:
proline, carbenes and something else. Working in the laboratory of
professor Carsten Bolm I have discovered a new methodology for the
preparation of chiral b-lactams and I have crystallized a copper
chiral sulfoximine complex (first example in the literature).
07/2002 to
08/2002 Visiting
scientist with Professor Thomas Ward (3 weeks, Neuchătel,
Switzerland). The synthesis of interesting new achiral ligands
capable to select interaction with a protein was developed. The
chiral ligands was used encapsulated in a protein to promote
enantioselective transformation. The concept is new and really
important.
07/2002 to
08/2002 Visiting
scientist with Dr. Paul Van der Schaaf at Ciba (1 week, Ciba,
Basel). Further work on chiral ligands.
01/2002 to
02/2002 Visiting
scientist with Dr. Paul Van der Schaaf at Ciba (Ciba, Basel). I
have developed a general synthesis for chiral ligands. The
synthesis and properties of the ligands were studied and
preliminary interesting results were obtained.
07/2001 to
08/2001 Visiting
scientist with Professor S. Gambarotta (Ottawa). During this period
5 new ligands containing pyrrole were prepared. The structure of
two of them were determined by X-ray ananlysis. Work is in progress
to prepare new materials and complexes and to use these complexes
in catalysis. The collaboration with professor Gambarotta is still
in course.
10/2000 to
11/2000 Visiting
scientist with Dr.s Andreas Hafner and Dr. Paul Van der Schaaf at Ciba (Ciba, Basel). The
work was successful in exploring a class of potentially useful
ligands based on heterocycle scaffold (HetPHOX). The ligads were
recently patented and will be described in ICOS-14
meeting.
08/2000 to
09/2000 Visiting
scientist with prof. Karl Anker Jørgensen at Aarhüs University
(Aarhüs, Denmark). During this short period was examined a
catalytic enantioselective metathesis reaction based on ruthenium
and the catalytic addition of R2Zn to activated iminoesters. In the
second project promising results were obtained.
08/1999 to
09/1999 Visiting
scientist with Prof. Andreas Pfaltz at Basel University (Basel,
Switzerland). The preparation of new efficient and promising
Phosphino-oxazoline for the enantioselective reduction of non
functionalyzed double bond were developed.
07/1998 to
09/1998 Visiting
scientist with Dr.s Andreas Hafner and Michael Tinkl at Ciba
Specialty in Marly, (Fribourg, Switzerland). During this period i
was successful in developing a new palladium based methodology for the
preparation of fine chemicals.
07/1997 to
09/1997 Visiting
scientist with Prof. S.L. Regen at Lehigh University (Pa, USA). The
preparation of new membrane device for the gas separation were
accomplish using (PTMSP) as supporting material,
a-cyclodextrine/sodium phenoxide as gutter layer, and a single
monolayer of a
substituted calix[6]arene as primary barrier for the
transport.
04/1991 to
10/1994 “Assistant
diplomeè” n inorganic and organometallic chemistry at Lausanne
University. This work
was oriented toward the study and development of organometallic
Lewis acids, metal enolates, and organometallic intermediates, most
of which were fully characterized in the solid state and in
solution.
02/1990 to
03/1991 “Borsa di
studio” with Prof. M. Cinquini and Prof. F. Cozzi at the University
of Milan. During this period I played a considerable role in
developing a new methodology for the synthesis of b-lactams using
titanium enolates.
02/1989 to
10/1990 “Borsa di
studio” with Prof. C.
Scolastico at the University of Milan. During this period, we
achieved the total synthesis of an alkaloid and this compound
showed interesting properties related to neurotoxin
activity.
05/1988 to
01/1989 Graduate
research at the University of Milan under the supervision of Prof.
C. Gennari. Under his supervision, I reached a good level of
expertise with enantioselective and diastereoselective Lewis
acid-promoted reactions.
