Biography
Massimo Rudan was born in Bologna, Italy, on September 7, 1949.

He received a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1973 and a degree in Physics in 1976, both from the University of Bologna.
He joined the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informatica e Sistemistica (DEIS) of the University of Bologna in 1975.
From 1978 he has been teaching an annual course of Quantum Electronics in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bologna, firstly as Lecturer and then as Associate Professor.
In 1990, he was appointed Full Professor of Microelectronics at the University of Bologna.
In 2001 he has been one of the founders of the Advanced Research Center on Electronic Systems (ARCES) of the University of Bologna, where he leads the research activities on Advanced Device Modeling and Quantum Computation.

In 2021 he has become Professor Emeritus of the University of Bologna.

M. Rudan is an IEEE Life Fellow.

Summary of Activities

Early investigations in the field of the analytical modelling of semiconductor devices.
Since 1983 M. R. has been working in a group involved in investigations on physics of carrier transport and numerical analysis of semiconductor devices.
In 1986 he has been a visiting scientist, on a one-year assignment, at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center at Yorktown Heights, NY, studying the discretization techniques for the higher-order moments of the Boltzmann Transport Equation. He was again with IBM for shorter periods afterwards, investigating and implementing impact-ionization models based on the average energy of the carriers.
Since 1983 M. R. has been involved as Partner representative or Task leader in a number of successive ESPRIT projects in the area of CAD for VLSI, and in other Projects supported by the National Council of Research, IBM, and SGS-Thomson Microelectronics. The ESPRIT Projects are CVT, E-833, E-962 (EVEREST), E-2197 (STORM), E-6075 (DESSIS), E-7236/8002/21752 (ADEQUAT), E-23643 (ESDEM).
M. R. has been, or currently is, Guest Editor of the IEEE Trans. on Computer-Aided Design, Editor of COMPEL, Editor of The International Journal of Numerical Modelling, Chairman, Committee Member, or Organizer, of the SISDEP, ESSDERC, and IWCE Conferences.
With Prof. H. Baltes of ETH Zürich and Prof. W. Göpel of Universität Tübingen, M. R. is a recipient of the 1998 Körber Foundation Award for the Project Elektronische Mikronase für flüchtige organische Verbindungen.
From 1998 to 2010 he has been President of the Board of Electronics of the University of Bologna.
