The research interests are aimed in particular at hydraulic constructions in urban areas including both urban drainage systems and aqueduct systems.

Scientific activity

The research activity, which began in 1995 with the PhD, concerned Hydraulic Constructions, mainly addressing issues in the field of urban drainage systems, aqueduct systems and waterways.

In particular, the study of urban drainage systems was dealt with both from the experimental point of view, with the collection of data on rainfall, flow and on the aspects of water quality, and from the point of view of numerical modeling; the aspects connected with the polluting impact of these systems on the receptors and the interventions necessary for their mitigation were also studied. Parallel to these aspects, research was carried out on the modeling and monitoring of water courses both from the hydraulic point of view and with regard to the propagation aspects of the pollutants released by the flood drains in rainy weather. Particular attention was then paid to sustainable urban drainage with various experimental activities related to the effectiveness of green roofs and drainage pavements for the reduction of meteoric runoff in urban sewage systems.

Other significant research activities were conducted for the development of Decision Support Systems aimed at optimizing the management of urban drainage systems.

In the field of aqueduct systems, the research activity mainly concerned the aspects of optimizing the operation of the networks and the control of water losses. The latter aspect was addressed through the use of Performance Indicators used both to assess the status of water systems and to identify the optimal management strategies. Similarly, hybrid aqueduct systems have been studied inside the buildings, i.e. such as to recover and reuse rainwater and gray water for non-drinking purposes.

The activities described above were conducted within the framework of research projects funded by both the MIUR and the European Community as well as within the framework of various agreements with public and private entities. The main research projects will be highlighted in the rest of the document. The research activity has led to the creation of over 130 scientific publications both in journals and in National and International Conferences.
