Associate Professor of Agricultural Chemistry at the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences (DISTAL), University of Bologna, since 2019.
His research focuses on soil chemistry and fertility, sustainable nutrient management, innovative fertilizers, and the agronomic valorization of agro-industrial by-products and biosolids. Particular attention is devoted to understanding how agronomic practices, including tillage, crop rotations, intercropping systems, and fertilization strategies, influence soil quality, nutrient cycling, microbial activity, and overall soil functionality.
He is currently involved in several European research projects addressing soil health, circular bioeconomy, nutrient recycling, and sustainable fertilizer production, including the Horizon Europe projects SOUL (Bio-based in Soil Applications with Optimal Biodegradation in their Ultimate Life), ReLeaf (Recycling Locally Produced Bio-Wastes to Ensure Affordability and Availability of Innovative Bio-Based Fertilisers), and ECHO (Engaging Citizens in Soil Science: the Road to Healthier Soil).
He graduated in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Bologna in 1997 and obtained a PhD in Agricultural Chemistry from the University of Turin in 2003. After serving as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bologna (2003–2008), he became Researcher in Agricultural Chemistry in 2008 and Associate Professor in 2019.
His teaching activity covers soil chemistry, soil quality assessment, carbon cycling, and biogeochemistry within undergraduate and graduate programmes of the University of Bologna.
He has participated in numerous national and international research projects as principal investigator, co-investigator, or project partner. From 2003 to 2004, he was Visiting Researcher at the Laboratoire de Photochimie Moléculaire et Macromoléculaire (CNRS, Clermont-Ferrand, France) within the Marco Polo Programme.
He serves as reviewer for several international journals in the fields of Agricultural Chemistry, Soil Science, and Environmental Sciences and has been a member of the Editorial Board of Sustainability (MDPI) since 2019.
His academic activity includes the supervision and co-supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and international trainees. He has also contributed to the organization of several national and international scientific conferences and workshops.
