The scientific research activity covers various topics in engineering geology, with a focus on the stability of natural and engineered slopes.
Emphasis is placed on predisposing and triggering factors at different time scales, geological and geomorphological mapping, geological prospecting, in situ and remote sensing monitoring, numerical modeling, and the design of mitigation measures. Research also extends to sites of high environmental and cultural value. The evaluation of groundwater resources under changing climatic conditions and the study of interactions between flood control reservoirs and porous aquifers in alluvial fans and plains are examined, along with liquefaction phenomena from a palaeoseismological perspective. The primary research areas include the northern Apennines, the eastern Alps, and the Po River Valley.
