Juan Carlos Barbero Bernal has been in service since May 2, 2017, as Associate Professor in scientific sector L-LIN/07 (Language and Translation - Spanish Language) at the Dipartimento di Scienze umane (Department of Human Sciences) of the University of L'Aquila. Before that, and since October 1, 2011, he has been Assistant Professor (Ricercatore Universitario) at the same department.
In 2015, he obtained the title of Dottore di Ricerca (PhD) in Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies at the DIT (Department of Interpreting and Translation) of the University of Bologna, under the supervision of Prof. San Vicente. Title of dissertation: Catálogo y estudio de las gramáticas de italiano para hispanohablantes. Siglos XVIII y XIX (Catalogue and study of grammars of Italian for Spanish speakers. 18th and 19th centuries). From January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2010, he was Postdoctoral Researcher (Assegnista di Ricerca) at SITLeC (Department of Interdisciplinary Studies on Translation, Languages and Cultures), University of Bologna with a project on the Spanish/Italian contrastive study of verbs (Tutor: Prof. Capanaga). He got his Degree in Spanish Philology at the University of Salamanca (September 14, 1993).
As for his institutional work at the University of L’Aquila, since 2015, he has been Erasmus Delegate at the Department of Human Sciences and member of the Erasmus Commission of the University. At the same Department he is also member of the Commissione contratti (since academic year 2014-2015); member of the Consiglio di Area Didattica of Mediazione linguistica e culturale, Lettere and Filosofia e Teoria dei Processi Comunicativi.
He has more than 20 years of teaching experience focusing mainly on Spanish as a foreign language and, more specifically, on Spanish for Italian speakers. Currently, at the Department of Human Sciences of the University of L’Aquila, he teaches Lingua e linguistica spagnola I, Lingua e traduzione spagnola I and Lingua e traduzione spagnola II since academic year 2011/2012. Recently, in May 2017, he participated in a teaching staff Erasmus+ exchange at the University of Salamanca, invited by Prof. Gómez Asencio. He taught two seminars in the PhD course in Español: investigación avanzada en Lengua y Literatura. The two seminars were: (1) La tradición gramatical italoespañola hasta el siglo XIX: evolución, contexto, finalidades, estructura y métodos; (2) Casi veinte años de gramática contrastiva español-italiano: de Carrera Díaz a la GREIT (1997-2015).
Previously, from 2002 to 2011, he was a Collaboratore Linguistico at the University of Bologna (Forlì), with more than 4000 hours of teaching of Spanish language and of creation of printed and multimedia materials for teaching Spanish at the Language Centre of the University, the School for Interpreters and Translators and the Faculty of Political Sciences. From 1997 to 2000 he taught Spanish language and culture courses at the University of Salamanca.
One of his main work activities is very much connected to teaching: the creation of printed and online materials for teaching Spanish and Italian to Italian and Spanish speakers respectively. An example of this activity are publications for schools, such as Gramática en contraste (2018, Bermejo, Barbero, San Vicente) and for university learners, such as Contrastiva – Grammatica della lingua Spagnola (2012, Barbero, San Vicente, Bermejo) and multimedia courses of Spanish and Italian 9 Aproches (2009) and 9 Passi (2009 and 2011). His scientific activity and his research interests are also related with grammar and the teaching of Spanish and Italian as foreign languages, in this case from a historiographic point of view and with a grammaticographic and metalexicographic approach. In fact, he catalogued and studied grammars of Italian for Spanish-speakers published in the 18th and 19th centuries and he studied the main grammatical issues in Italian-Spanish bilingual dictionaries. He presented his research at international conferences held by important universities, and his publications in this field stand out for their number and quality and were reviewed at national and international level. Currently, his research activity continues in the field of grammaticography and without losing sight of lexicography, with the study of the Italian-Spanish grammar tradition of the 20th century; his research is also extending to recent times with the analysis of the verbal syntagma in Spanish-Italian grammars from 1997 to 2015.
In close connection with these two lines of research, he is participating in several projects, including the following:
