Curriculum vitae

Jane Johnson has been a tenured research lecturer at the University of Bologna since 2008. Her research focuses on English Language and Linguistics. In particular, her research involves the use of corpora in discourse analysis; English for Specific Purposes, particularly institutional discourse, political discourse, and media discourse; and corpus stylistics especially as regards translation between Italian and English. Her current research projects concern English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) at tertiary level, and the design of resources to support lecturers teaching in English on international courses; the creation of corpora in English as a teaching source for Social Work students; and discourse analysis of newspaper texts on the theme of climate change and human migration (with Cinzia Bevitori).

Education

She graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English and European Literature from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom.

In 1996 she gained a Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from Cambridge University.

In 1997 she gained a Diploma in Translation (Italian/English) from the Institute of Linguists, London.

In 2007 she completed a Masters degree in Translation Studies (with Merit) at the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom).

Academic Career

She began her academic career as a contract lecturer (from 2000 - 2007) at the School for Interpreters and Translators of the University of Bologna (SSLMIT) where she taught Translation into English, and English Language.

Between 2005 and 2007 she taught English Language and English Linguistics (Corpus Linguistics Module) at the School of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature, University of Bologna.

In 2008 she became a tenured researcher in the disciplinary area L-LIN/12 English Language and Translation within the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LILEC).

Teaching

Between 2000 and 2008 she held a number of teaching contracts at the University of Bologna on the Bachelors’ degree and Masters’ degree courses at the School of Interpreters and Translators, the School of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures, and the School of Political Science.

Since 2008 she has taught English at the Faculty of Political Science (Scienze Politiche Sociali e Internazionali – SPOSI; Social Services; Politica, Amministrazione e Organizazioni - PAO)

At present she teaches English Language for Public Administration on the Masters degree in Politics, Administration and Organizations (Department of Political Science) and English for Specific Purposes on the Masters degree in Language, Society and Communication.

Membership of scientific and editorial committees

Since 2018 she has been Technical Editor for the Journal of Computer Assisted Discourse Studies (JCADS) (Cardiff University)

Institutional and organisational roles

As tutor she was responsible for a research grant (DIRI) into English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) 2018-2020

She acts as local referee for GE.RAS [http://www.geras.fr/index.php] (Groupe d‘étude et de Recherche en Anglais de Spècialitè).

Since a.y. 2019-20 she has been Quality Delegate for the English version of the personal webpages of LILEC lecturers

Since a.y. 2017-2018 she has been a member of the Quality Assurance Committee (LILEC) for the Masters degree course in Language, Society and Communication
