M.Sc., Ph.D., Full Professor of Geotechnical Engineering, University of Bologna (Italy).

High school diploma in classical studies in Venice. M.Sc. with full marks and honours in Civil Engineering at the University of Padova. PhD in Geotechnical Engineering at the Technical University of Torino. Visiting research fellow at the University of Southampton (UK). Post-doctoral fellow at the University of Padova. Marie Curie Research Fellow at the British Universities of Oxford and Southampton (1994 to 1995).

From 1995, Assistant Professor at the Engineering Faculty of the University of Bologna. From 2001, Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the Department DISTART of the University of Bologna. Since March 2011, Full Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM) of the University of Bologna.

Since Academic Year 1998-99, lecturer of Soil Mechanics and Ground Improvement for Civil and Environmental Engineering. Lecturer of Geotechnical Engineering for the international Master Course in Civil Engineering. He was Coordinator of the Bachelor degree in Building Engineering in 2013-16. Scientific coordinator of several research projects and of Erasmus exchange programmes for international student mobility. Member of the Board of Teachers of the PhD School in “Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering” of the University of Bologna. Member of the DICAM Board.

President of the National Group of Geotechnical Engineering (GNIG) for the 2021-2024 period. Past board member of the Italian Geotechnical Association (AGI). Coordinator of the AGI working group for the preparation of the national Guidelines on "Defense from Floods". Nominated member of TCs 201 and 301, technical committees of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) on "Dykes and Levees" and on “Preservation of Historic Sites”. Chairman of the 5th International Symposium on Cone Penetration Testing CPT'22, Bologna, 8-10 June 2022.

Technical support for the University of Bologna of the Observatory for the monitoring of the environmental impacts of the construction of the new Bologna-Firenze motorway. Coordinator of the working group “River banks” for the analysis of the areas involved by the Emilia seismic events of May 2012. Member of the Technical-Scientific Committee supporting the Bologna municipality in the monitoring of the Garisenda Tower.

Visiting Professor at primary foreign universities. External reviewer for international geotechnical journals. Author and co-author of about 150 scientific papers of geotechnical subject, concerning in particular: the physical and analytical modelling of the behaviour of shallow foundations with special reference to offshore innovative applications, the geotechnical characterization by in situ tests, the assessment of the probability of failure of river embankments under transient flow, the intervention strategies for the mitigation of piping phenomena, the stability analysis of ancient towers and historic sites, the slope stability analyses and landslide risk assessment, the physical and numerical modelling of the response of falling rock protection barriers.
