Research topics are: LASER and GMAW technologies (cutting, welding,
hybrid welding, welding of dissimilar and innovative materials,
heat treatment, surface modification), foundry technologies
(manufacturing tools optimization: design of filling and feeding
system by CAE instruments) and materials characterization.
Since 2006, joining methods and innovative applications for hybrid
metallic materials with a foamed core (Aluminum foam filled
stainless steel tubes and Aluminum Foamed Sandwiches) have been
investigated.
Research methods are based on both esperimental activities and on
modelling and simulation of the processes.
Themes
Process modelling and experimental activity on laser cutting,
welding, hybrid welding, laser heat treatment, laser surface
modification. The final aim of the modelisation activity was the
prediction of the processes feasibility area and their
optimisation.
Laser cutting modelling by means of analytical mathematics allowed
the prediction of the feasibility area for the process. The metal
expulsion was modelled: the calculated velocity of ejection from
the bottom part of the kerf and the thickness of the molten
material inside the kerf was found in relationship with the quality
of the process.
Laser heat treatment was modelled by means of the FDM and allowed
the prediction of the microstructures evolution and final
performances.
Hybrid laser-GMAW technologies was investigated by means of
experimental activities. Main result was the evaluation of the
effect on welds shape and soundness due to the assistant gases
composition.
Metal foam: innovative joining techniques for innovative
application.
