SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS

RESEARCH ACTIVITY AREAS

1989-1998: research activities on the molecular evolution, systematics, hybridization and reproductive modes invertebrate taxa (insects, molluscs, and crustaceans). Description of achievements is omitted because not directly related to the research topics of the submitted proposal.

1998-today: research activities on the micro- and macro-evolutionary patterns and mechanisms in marine taxa of the North-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, with emphasis to bioeconomically important fishery resources. Relevant achievements of the research activities have been the definition of spatial and temporal patterns of intraspecific genetic diversity in the Adriatic and Mediterranean stocks of pelagic and demersal species; the assessment of population units, geographic boundaries and genetic parameters in the exploited fisheries shared stocks of the Adriatic Sea; the assessment of population structure and microevolution of the Central Mediterranean common soles; the reconstruction of spatial and temporal evolutionary patterns and processes of cartilaginous (Rajidae) and bony (Soleidae; Scombridae) fish of the North-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean; the development of molecular markers and technologies useful for genetic analyses in marine species and ecosystems, such as DNA sequence markers for multiple taxonomic levels, arrays of species-specific microsatellite and SNP loci, microarray DNA technologies; the development of on-line data bank for the monitoring and conservation of Mediterranean skates and rays (Rajidae).
