1. Specialized translation

The research activity is concentrated on theory of legal translation (factors determinating method of legal translation), equivalence between legal concepts, translation of textual conventions, specific problems of legal translation from Italian into German and limits of translator's ressources (see the articles “Zum Wissen des Rechtsübersetzers und zur Wissensaufbereitung in übersetzerischen Hilfsmitteln” (2008), “Rechtsübersetzung: Praxis – Theorie – Didaktik” (2009), “La traduzione giuridica tra teoria e pratica” (2011), “Verhandlung in der Rechtsübersetzung” (2012), “Die notarielle Urkunde im italienisch-deutschen Vergleich: Überlegungen zur Übersetzung von Immobilienkaufverträgen” (2013), “Kulturspezifik in Recht und Technik und Konsequenzen für die Übersetzung” (2018) and the first part of the monograph „Rechtsübersetzung und Hilfs­mittel zur Translation. 2. Special languages

The research activity is concentrated on legal language. Special attention is paid to the characteristics of legal terminology, the boundary between general and legal language, the limits of legal definition and the functions of vagueness and indeterminacy in legal texts. A new proposal was made for the classification of legal texts. Other research activity concerns the textual conventions of Italian and German legal texts, the causal relations and the semantic value of connectors and the legal fraseology. Some kinds of phenomena are analysed with methods of corpus linguistics (see the articles “Berücksichtigung von Textsortenkonventionen bei der Übersetzung von Rechtstexten am Beispiel der Übersetzung italienischer Atti di citazione ins Deutsche” (1999), “Zur Vagheit in Vertragstexten: Rechtliche Funktionen und übersetzungsrelevante Dimensionen vager Wörter und Wortverbindungen” (2006), “Termini mit Tücken. 3. Language of notaries

Several publications concern the language of Italian and German notaries, particulary the characteristics of phraseology in Italian notarial texts (see the article “Der Sprachgebrauch des Notars. Analyse und Übersetzung phraseologischer Wortverbindungen aus italienischen notariellen Urkunden”, 2009), the conservative character of the language of Italian and German notaries (see the article “Der Sprachgebrauch des italienischen Notars in diachronischer Perspektive: Norm, Konvention und Variation”, 2009, and the article “Ältere sprachliche Mittel und Veränderungen im lexikalischen Bereich: eine Untersuchung zum Konservativismus in deutschen notariellen Urkunden”, 2013), the comprensibility of German notarial texts (see the article “Die Sprache des deutschen Notars gestern und heute. Dimensionen der Verständlichkeit”, 2012) and the influence of legal norms on Italian and the German notarial texts (“Der notarielle Sprachgebrauch und seine Beeinflussung durch Normen: ein Vergleich zwischen Italien und Deutschland”, 2013). Another article about notarial language concerns diatopic expressions in Bavarian notarial texts (“Sprachliche Besonderheiten von Urkunden bayerischer Notare”, 2013).

In 2018, this line of research culminated in a monograph entitled “Der notarielle Immobilienkaufvertrag in Italien und Deutschland. Eine kontrastive diachronische Untersuchung zur Bedeutung von Norm und Konvention sowie zur Entwicklung der Textsorte”. The monograph is a contribution to diachronic contrastive textology as well as to the recent history of the textual genre "notarial real estate contract" in Italy and Germany. Its aim is to develop and apply an analysis model that allows not only to describe the textual genre in a contrastive perspective and on both a synchronic and diachronic axis, but above all to explain which factors have most determined its linguistic form.

4. Lexicography and terminology

The research activity is concentrated on the development of a database structure which responds to the needs of legal translators and allows to manage collocations and other phraseological units. The delevopment of this database structure is based on the revision of the onomasiological approach to terminology. On the one hand a database named JUSLEX was developed, on the other hand several publications were presented (see the articles “JUSLEX oder Die elektronische Verwaltung rechtssprachlicher Terminologie und Phraseologie” (2004), “Neue Wege der Beschreibung von Rechtstermini: der semasiologisch-onomasiologische Ansatz der Begriffsbestimmung und seine Bedeutung für den Rechtsübersetzer” (2005), “Terminologia e fraseologia del diritto” (2005), “Lessicografia e diritto – il progetto JUSLEX” (2006) and  “Qualität der Rechtsübersetzung – der Beitrag von JUSLEX” (2007), and the second and the third part of the monograph „Rechtsübersetzung und Hilfs­mittel zur Translation. Wissenschaftliche Grund­lagen und com­putergestützte Umsetzung eines lexiko­graphi­schen Konzepts“ (2004)).

5. Translation and didactics

The research activity is concentrated on translator's competences and the role of didactics. Several didactic proposals were made with regard to learning contents, choice of texts, didactic progression and teaching methods. Another focus concerns the specialized knowledge and his acquisition and management. This part of research activity is also based on the analysis of translator's errors. Other publications concern specific translation problems such as realia and proper names. Several publications were presented (see “La traduzione giuridica dal punto di vista didattico” (2002), “Wissenserwerb und Wissenstransfer in der Rechtsübersetzerausbildung” (2006), “Didaktik der Rechtsübersetzung – Zur Aufbereitung, Vermittlung und Erarbeitung fachlichen Wissens und zum Umgang mit Hilfsmitteln” (2007), “Rechtstexte – eine übersetzerische Herausforderung und ihre didaktischen Konsequenzen” (2009), “Competenze interculturali e didattica della traduzione giuridica” (2016), “Die Übersetzungen der Südtiroler Burgenführer. Zum Einfluss des multikulturellen Kontexts und der fachlichen Qualifikation beim Umgang mit Realien” (2017) and, together with Laura Sergo, “Realien als Übersetzungsproblem – am Beispiel der Südtiroler Burgenführer” (2014)).

6. Easy-to-read language

In the area of easy-to-read language research has so far focused on the differences between easy-to-read language and other forms of linguistic simplification, on the problems inherent in the inhomogeneity of the target group and the discrepancy between the objectives set and the linguistic means used to realise them for the benefit of the recipients, and on the particular difficulties posed by the translation of legal texts, i.e. laws, into easy-to-read language. The latter were addressed in the forthcoming paper entitled 'Übersetzung in Leichte Sprache. Zur Problematik der Übersetzung von Gesetzestexten am Beispiel des Infektionsschutzgesetzes'.
