In breve

Ottenuta la Laurea in Scienze Politiche presso l'Università di Macerata, Enrico Santarelli (1957) ha completato la sua formazione presso la University of Sussex (UK) dove, sotto la supervisione del Professor G.N. Von Tunzelmann, ha ottenuto il Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies con una tesi dal titolo "Finance and Technological Change". Nel 1987 è diventato Ricercatore di Politica Economica all'Università "G. D'Annunzio" di Teramo, dal 1992 al 2000 è stato Professore Associato di Politica Economica all’Università di Bologna, dove dal 2000 è Professore Ordinario. Tra il 2003 e il 2009 è stato Research Professor al Max Planck Institute of Economics (Entrepreneurship, Growth and Public Policy Group) di Jena (Germania) e nel 2010 ha prestato servizio come Senior Scientist (GH40) all'Institute for Perspective Technological Studies (JRC-IPTS) della Commissione Europea (sede di Siviglia). E' stato Visiting Professor in numerose università estere, tra le quali: Berkeley, Erasmus di Rotterdam, Luxembourg, Maastricht, Saarland, Stanford e Sussex. E' stato consulente della Commissione Europea, dell'International Labour Organization (ILO), del World Institute for Development Economic Research (UNU-WIDER), nonché di numerose organizzazioni e imprese private.

Per il triennio dal 2021-22 al 2023-24 è Coordinatore del Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Economia e Diritto (CLAMED) dell'Università di Bologna.

E' Editor di Small Business Economics, Associate Editor dell'International Journal of Intellectual Property Management, e membro dell'Editorial board dell'Eurasian Business Review e del Journal of Entrepreneurial and Organizational Diversity. Dal 2012 al 2020 è stato membro del Board of Review del Journal of Business Venturing. Ha fatto parte dell'Executive Committee della European Association for Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE) dal 2004 al 2010.

I suoi principali interessi di ricerca vertono sull'analisi economica dell'imprenditorialità, la crescita e l'attività innovativa delle imprese, l'economia regionale, l'economia del lavoro e l'analisi economica del diritto. 

Ha pubblicato in numerose riviste indicizzate in Scopus e Web of Science, incluse: Research Policy, Regional Studies, Small Business Economics, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Evolutionary Economics, Journal of Technology Transfer, Industrial and Corporate Change, International Small Business Journal, Applied Economics, Southern Economic Journal, Economics of Transition, Industry and Innovation, Review of Industrial Organization, Scientometrics, History of Political Economy, Empirical Economics, Growth and Change, Annals of Regional Science, Foundations and Trends in Entrepreneurship, BMC Health Policy.

Tra i suoi co-autori figurano alcuni dei più importanti studiosi internazionali dell'imprenditorialità e dei processi di dinamica industriale, tra i quali: David Audretsch, Martin Carree, Samuel Gosling, Martin Obschonka, Roy Thurik, and Marco Vivarelli.

Imprenditorialità; entrata, crescita e sopravvivenza delle imprese; dinamica industriale nelle economie in transizione; economia delle piccole imprese; analisi brevettuale; innovazione nelle industrie ad alta intensità tecnologica; innovazione nelle industrie dei beni di consumo tradizionali, cambiamento tecnologico e cambiamento organizzativo skill-biased; economa regionale; economia del lavoro; analisi economica del diritto; econometria applicata.

Premi e riconoscimenti:

- Premio per il miglior paper presentato all'Annual Meeting dellaTechnology Transfer Society, tenutosi ad Augsburg il 21-23 settembre 2011. Il paper premiato (in collaborazione con Martin Carree e Antonio Della Malva della Maastricht University) si intitola “The Contribution of Universities to Growth: Empirical Evidence for Italy”. Studiando le provincie italiane tra il 2001 e il 2006, il paper dimostra che l'impatto dell'attività delle università sulla crescita economica a livello provinciale è positivo e statisticamente significativo quando la presenza delle università è associata a un elevato tasso di imprenditorialità. 

- Small Business Economics Journal premio Editor of the year 2017 per avere “performed an exceptional service to Small Business economics Journal over the years as a reviewer, Editorial Board Member, Associate Editor, and Editor. His dedication to SBEJ has increased the quality of its scholarship over the years, helped scholars navigate the currents of research, and assisted the Editors-in-Chief in publishing the best research possible”.
