Description of the internship:
The internship focuses on analysing a new sampling design for the French Labour Force Survey, taking into account both statistical accuracy and survey costs. The current sampling approach relies on clusters of dwellings, which is less efficient than desired and relatively complex to manage. The objective is to propose an alternative two-stage sampling design, with primary sampling units consisting of geographic areas that will need to be defined. To construct these areas, the proposed approach is to start with squares defined by GPS coordinates that partition the whole of France into sections and then aggregate them, subject to specific constraints, using a "travelling salesman" algorithm. Different methodologies for sampling dwellings (secondary sampling units) within these primary units will then be simulated and compared with the current design in terms of sampling variance. Surveyors’ travel costs are expected to play a key role in determining the optimal sampling design. The work will be carried out using R, and the internship therefore requires a very good command of the R programming language, as well as a strong interest in statistical methodology, particularly survey sampling theory.
