A call is now open for two 18-month research positions at the Department of Social and Political Sciences, University of Milan, within the SOCIAL project, funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research under the FIS-2 programme. The project examines social relationships, digital technologies, inequalities, and wellbeing in later life using quantitative, longitudinal and comparative data.The main requirements and conditions are:

a Master’s, single-cycle, or equivalent degree obtained no more than six years before the application deadline; no specific degree class is required;
a background in the social sciences, statistics, demography, economics, or related disciplines;
quantitative skills, good command of English, and familiarity with R, Stata, or equivalent software;
a PhD is not required;
enrolment in a PhD programme is incompatible with holding the position;
duration: 18 months;
gross annual remuneration: €33,840.

The positions are based at the University of Milan, with some flexibility for remote working arrangements, subject to agreement with the project supervisor and applicable University regulations. Sixth edition of the European Big Data Hackathon in Brussels 11-15 March 2027

Please, let me know if you are interested in participating in the sixth edition of the European Big Data Hackathon (‘the Hackathon’) that will be held in Brussels from 11 to 15 March 2027, as a satellite event of the Conference New Techniques and Technologies for Statistics (NTTS 2027nbsp;https://cros.ec.europa.eu/NTTS2027]). This year, EMOS-labelled master programmes will again be able to nominate EMOS teams that will compete for a special EMOS hackathon prize.

EMOS teams’ registration

The teams should preferably count three members and can be composed of students enrolled and staff teaching in EMOS-labelled university programmes – from a single EMOS-labelled university programme or as a collaboration of several EMOS-labelled programmes, also across countries.

EMOS teams can be proposed until 30 September 2026

Travel and accommodation arrangements

The European Commission, in collaboration with its service provider, will arrange travel and accommodation in the hackathon venue for the time of the competition for all EMOS students accepted to the European Big Data Hackathon so that the students do not need to incur any costs in this regard.

Prize

Apart from being awarded a hackathon prize, the best EMOS team will also be given the opportunity to present their prototype at a plenary session of the NTTS conference on 16 March 2027.

Hackathon topic

To fully exploit the potential of web-based sources and its usage in the labour statistics domain, the focus of the 2027 edition of the Hackathon will be on Online Job Advertisements data.

Event outline and preparation

The hackathon will take place in Brussels, as an in-person four-day event and back-to back to the NTTS 2027 conference.

Teams will compete for the best application of novel, big and/or open data addressing a pressing European policy or statistical need. Information on the policy domain(s) and a catalogue of datasets will be provided in advance, while the specific data challenge will be announced at the beginning of the hackathon. After the challenge announcement, the teams will then work for about two-and-half days developing their prototype. In the last day of the work on their projects, the teams will have an opportunity to discuss them bilaterally with organizers and evaluators in ‘pre-evaluation’ meetings. At the end of the hacking time, the teams will have 7-10 minutes to present their data product/application to everyone. After the presentations, a panel of evaluators will rank proposed data products based on a set of criteria. The hackathon will finish with the announcement of the winner and up to five runners-up, selected from among the NSI hacking teams, and of an EMOS winning team, as well as audience prizes.

Pivot Your Future campaign

Important for EMOS students and graduates. Under the Blue Book Traineeship programme the European Commission offers five-month paid traineeships for applicants with a full three-year university degree. The candidate must have completed and obtained a full higher-education degree, corresponding to an EQF level 6 or higher, of at least 180 ECTS credits, or equivalent to at least a completed higher-education cycle.

Eurostat, as one of the Directorate-Generals of the European Commission, plans to publish under this programme up to 5 traineeship posts in different units working on statistical production, methodologies and dissemination.

Registration for the October 2026 session of the Blue Book Traineeship programme is open. Deadline for applicants: 7 April 2026, 10:00 a.m. (Brussels time)

Study grants for research period abroad for master thesis

On March 1^st 2026 the Department of Statistical Sciences will publish a call for 10 study grants for students (and/or graduates) of master’s degree programs to support a research period abroad aimed at preparing (or further develop) their master thesis.

Deadlines for applications:

April 30^th 2026: for research periods starting between 1 June and 30 November 2026
September 30^th 2026: for research periods starting between December 1^st 2026 and May 30^th 2027

The duration of the research period must be at least of three months and cannot exceed six months
For students of the Master Degrees in
- Statistical Sciences
- Greening Energy Market and Finance
- Statistics, Economics and Business
- Quantitative Finance

4 scholarships (for each deadline) are available

For students of the Master Degrees innbsp;Scienze Statistiche, Finanziarie e Attuarialinbsp;1 scholarship (for each deadline) is available.

The amount of each scholarship is between 2000€ and 3000€ (gross amount). The amount of the scholarships will be €3000 for destinations outside geographical Europe and €2000 for destinations within geographical Europe.

A document signed by the UNIBO thesis supervisor attesting the reasons and usefulness of the stay abroad for the student

Dear EMOS network members,

As part of the last few annual reporting exercises, it became clear that limiting the eligibility of internship hosts to official statistics producers (NSIs, ONAs, NCBs) presented an issue for many EMOS-labelled master’s programme coordinators and students. This was discussed by the EMOS Board during their meeting in October 2023. Based on the outcome of the discussion, the rules regarding internships were amended as follows:

The definition of the host institution has been broadened to include ‘any organisation producing or dealing with statistics and data, as long as the work performed is relevant to official statistics and based on the EMOS learning outcomes’,

This includes NSIs, ONAs, NCBs, international organisations (IO), universities, research institutions, private companies, etc.
To qualify for the EMOS label, universities still have to have a signed cooperation agreement with their NSI, NCB, an ONA or IO

The minimum duration for both in-country and cross-border internships is 8 weeks. This guarantees that 10 ECTS can be granted to students for their internship (1 ECTS = from 25 to 30 hours of work depending on country).

These changes have been incorporated in the EMOS Guide for applicants 2024, chapter 4 [https://cros.ec.europa.eu/book-page/4-criteria-awarding-emos-label] .

We have recently received a few questions regarding internship opportunities at Eurostat. Please note that Eurostat participates in the Blue Book Traineeships programme. Several Blue Book trainee positions are allocated to Eurostat each session. This is an opportunity for EMOS students to get a paid traineeship at Eurostat. There are two calls for applications each year and the next one opens in July. Please consult this calendar: https://traineeships.ec.europa.eu/calendar-sessions_en

Alternatively, Eurostat can host students for unpaid traineeships for a maximum of 4 weeks. For this type of traineeship, you can contact the EMOS secretariat directly.
