Description of the internship:
During the internship, the student will work with detailed retail sales microdata available in our internal data lake “Palantir Foundry” to develop municipality-level auxiliary indicators that could enhance small area poverty risk estimation. For example, the student will explore indicators related to the purchase of lower-priced goods, which may serve as proxies for the economic well-being of the population. The internship will focus on assessing the suitability of these indicators for small area estimation models, including the Fay–Herriot model and other relevant approaches. The student will compare model performance, evaluate the results, and prepare a concise methodological review accompanied by visualisations. The data are already prepared for analysis; therefore, the internship will focus primarily on constructing informative auxiliary variables, conducting statistical analyses, and evaluating their potential application in official statistics, rather than on initial data cleaning and processing.
