Valentina Alena Girelli is actually Researcher at the University of Bologna, School of Engineering and Architecture, and belongs to the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM).
Education
Valentina Girelli has a Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering (2003) and a PhD in Geomatics (2017) from the University of Bologna.
Research activity
Author of more than 60 scientific publications.
The research program is entitled “Integration of advanced geomatic techniques for the survey and the reconstruction of buildings and territory” and is related to the 3D surveying techniques and methodologies, especially in the field of Cultural Heritage and multi-temporal study of the territory, in an integrated and multi-disciplinary approach.
The research is primarily focused on deepening the potentials and the problems of the most modern 3D surveying techniques, in particular aerial and close-range digital photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanning, with the aim of mapping and modelling objects in a multi-scale approach, from lands to archaeological sites, from buildings to single artefacts.
From 2010 to 2014, still as research fellow, she carried out research activities in a project entitled “Ebla Chora - The early state and its chora. Towns, villages and landscape at Ebla in Syria during the 3rd Millennium BC. Royal archives, visual and material culture, remote sensing and artificial neural networks" (FP7-IDEAS-ERC-2009-AdG, 2010-2014).
Currently, she is involving in the following projects:
- "SUSHI-DROP - SUstainable fiSHeries wIth DROnes data Processing" (Interreg V-A Italy-Croatia CBC Programme 2014-2020);
- National Research Project PRIN2015 "GAMHer – Geomatics data acquisition and management for landscape and built heritage in a European Perspective" (2017-2020);
- Regional Project POR-FESR 2014-2020 "eBIM Existing Building Information Modeling per la gestione dell’intervento sul costruito esistente" (since 2019).
Member of the Scientific Board of SIFET, Italian Society of Photogrammetry and Topography (since 2019).
Member of "Alma HeritageScience", Integrated Research Team of Bologna University dedicated to Science and Technology for Cultural Heritage.
Member of AUTeC, Italian National Association of Professors in Surveying and Mapping.
She is also referee for many international journals in the field of Mapping and Remote Sensing. From 2019 she is member of the Reviewer Board of Remote Sensing.
Teaching activity
Currently, she is lecturer for the module of "Cartography and Spatial Data Management" (First Cycle Degree Programme in Building Engineering) and "Digital Mapping and GIS" (First Cycle Degree Programme in Environmental Engineering) at the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Bologna.
