Curriculum vitae

Prof. Tommaso Ruggeri is Professor Emeritus of the University of Bologna. Before was Full Professor of Mathematical Physics from 1980 until 2017 at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Bologna. He continues to carry out the scientific activity at the Alma Mater Research Center on Applied Mathematics - AM^2 and still teaches as a free contract professor the course of Mathematical Physics and Statistical Treatment of Observations for the Master's Degree in Civil Engineering. He is the author of over 280 publications, including 4 books and 3 scientific monographs. The researches carried out concern various problems of Mathematical Physics and in particular concern non-linear propagation problems for hyperbolic and thermomechanical systems of continuous media (classical and relativistic). In the first subject, he contributed to the questions concerning the symmetrization of hyperbolic systems with convex entropy density and problems concerning shock waves. In the sector of non-equilibrium thermodynamics he was one of the founders of modern extended thermodynamics and is the author with Ingo Mueller of the book Rational Extended Thermodynamics (Springer-Verlag 1993 and 1998, second reprint) and of the books Rational Extended Thermodynamics beyond the Monatomic Gas (Springer 2015) and Classical and Relativistic Rational Extended Thermodynamics of Gases, Springer (2021) written in collaboration with Masaru Sugiyama. He has been invited to lecture at numerous international conferences and in various universities and has also spent periods of stay in many prestigious foreign universities as a Visiting Professor. He lends his work as a reviewer for several international scientific journals and belongs to the editorial board of the Springer-Verlag journal Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Ricerche di Matematica (Springer-Verlag), Rendiconti Lincei Matematica e Applications (European Mathematical Society), Bulletin Unione Matematica Italiana, International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics (Elsevier), Entropy and is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Springer INdAM Series. He was National Coordinator of PRIN projects in the two-year periods 2000-2002, 2002-2004, 2005-2007. Project coordinator FARB Bologna 2012 "Extended Thermodynamics of Non-Equilibrium Processes from Macro-to Nano-Scale" He was director of the National Mathematical Physics Group (GNFM) of the National Institute of Higher Mathematics (INdAM) from 2000 to 2017, President of the Scientific Council of INdAM from 2011 to 2019 and member of the Executive Committee of the International Society for the Interaction of Mechanics and Mathematics (ISIMM) from 2008 to 2014. He gave the Prolusion at the inauguration of the Academic Year 2009-2010 of the University of Bologna. National Member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Member of the Academia Europapea, the European Academy of Science and Arts , the  European Academy of Sciences as well as of the Academies of Sciences of Bologna, Messina, and Naples. He has received several awards including in 2018 the International Prize Angiola Gili and Cataldo Agostinelli of the Accademia di Torino for Pure Mechanics or Classical Mathematical Physics.
