Adjunct Professor since the 1st of November 2019.

Former Full Professor of Solid Earth Geophysics, position held until 30 October 2019 when he retired. 

From November 2005 until November 2009 he has served as Chairman of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the North-East Atlantic, the Mediterranean and Connected Sea Tsunami Warning System (ICG/NEAMTWS), which is the subsidiary body of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) responsible for the coordination of the efforts to implement the Tsunami warning System in the Euro-Mediterranean area.

From November 2009 until November 2015 he has served as Co-chair of the Working Group 4 Public Awareness, Preparedness and Mitigation of the ICG/NEAMTWS.  

From April 2011 until April 2015 he has served as the President of the Natural Hazards Division of the European Geosciences Union (EGU).

Since April  2013 he is President of the International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG) (http://www.iapg.geoethics.org/).

Since 1987 is a Member of the International Tsunami Commission, founded in 1960 by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) to study tsunamis.

From 2002 until 2008 he has been one of the Editors-in-Chief of the journal Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, published by Pergamon Press.

He was Editor-in-Chief of the journal Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS) published by the European Geosciences Union (EGU) in the period 2012-2016.

Since 2015 he is Editor of the journal Pure and Applied Geophysics (PAGEOPH) published by Springer.

He was Vice-Chairman of the International Tsunami Commission in the period 1995-2003.

He has been Coordinator of the project GITEC (Genesis and Impact of Tsunamis on the European Coasts) financed by the European Commission. The project (1992-1995) was implemented by partners from six countries, namely Italy, France, Portugal, Greece, Norway and UK.

He has been Coordinator of the project GITEC-TWO (Genesis and Impact of Tsunamis on the European Coasts - Tsunami Warning and Observations) financed by the European Commission. The project (1996-1999) was a continuation of the activities undertaken in the project GITEC with a slightly modified partnership.

He was Coordinator of the project  Tsunami Hazard Assessment for the Mediterranean Region, co-financed by the European Commission on INTAS funds. In the three-year project research groups from Spain and Russia (Moscow and Novosibirsk) were involved.

He was Coordinator of the European project TRANSFER  (Tsunami Risk ANd Strategies For the European Region) undertaken by a Consortium of 29 partners, which started in 2006 and ended in September 2009.

He has been Leader of the University of Bologna Team in the European projects 3HAZ-Corinth (2004-2007), SCHEMA (Scenarios for Hazard-induced Emergencies Managements, 2007-2010), and DEWS (Distant Early Warning System; 2007-2010), TRIDEC (Collaborative, Complex And Critical Decision-Support In Evolving Crises, 2010-2013), NearToWarn (Near-field Tsunami Early Warning and Emergency Planning, 2012-2013) and ASTARTE (Assessment, STrategy And Risk Reduction for Tsunamis in Europe, 2013-2016).

He was Guest Editor of two special issues of the journal Science of Tsunami Hazards in 1988 and 1991. He was Editor of the volume Tsunamis in the World published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. He was Guest Editor of four special issues of the journal Physics and Chemistry of the Earth in 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2005. He was Guest Editor of the special issue Tsunamis in the Pacific, in the Atlantic and in Europe: relevant cases and hazard evaluation of the journal Marine Geology (n. 215, 2006). He was Guest Editor of several special issues of the journal Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences with title Tsunamis (2001), Tsunamis (2003), Tsunami Hazard from Slope Instability (2005), Extreme Sea Waves (2006), Tsunamis (2006), New Developments in Tsunami Science: from Hazard to Risk (2010), Tsunami Impact on- and offshore in the Andaman Sea Region (2011), Sea Hazards 82011).  He was Guest Editor of two volumes  Tsunamis in the World Ocean: Past, Present, and Future (Volume I  e Volume II) of the journal Pure and Applied Geophysics (n.168, 2011).

He has been Convenor and Co-convenor of many international symposia on Natural Risks and related subjects.
