Stefano Chessa Altieri is an Affiliated Researcher at the Centre for History of Sciences Po and the Gramsci Institute in Bologna, and a Teaching Fellow at the University of Bologna. He recently completed a PhD in Global History and Governance at the Scuola Superiore Meridionale (Italy) and Sciences Po (France), under the supervision of Prof. Mario Del Pero. His doctoral research examines U.S. foreign policy toward China after the Tiananmen crackdown of June 1989, analysing the strategic, economic, and ethical dimensions of the relationship in the early post–Cold War era.
During his graduate studies, Stefano Chessa Altieri was a 2024–25 Fox Fellow at Yale University’s MacMillan Center, a recipient of the Columbia Alliance Program at Columbia University, and a visiting PhD student at American University in Washington, D.C. At Sciences Po, he has also served as a teaching assistant in global history and transatlantic relations and co-convened the annual LSE–Sciences Po Seminar in Contemporary International History.
Before his PhD, Stefano Chessa Altieri completed an MSc in the History of International Relations at the London School of Economics (with distinction, under the supervision of Prof. Casey) and a dual Master’s in International Relations at Sciences Po and Fudan University in Shanghai. He has also worked in the Markets and External Affairs Division at Bocconi University, Milan.
