Associate professor at University of Bologna Department of Medicine and Surgery (DIMEC) and doctor at Policlinico Universitario Sant'Orsola Malpighi. He conducts research in pediatrics and in particular in pediatric hematology and oncology. The research interests mainly involve pediatric acute leukemias, hematopoietic stem cells transplantation and the new methods of massive sequencing of the genome for the study of pediatric malignant hematopathies.

Training and academic assignments

He received humanistic education and obtained his high school diploma in 1998, graduated in 2004 in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna. He obtained the qualification to practice as a doctor-surgeon in 2004 and the specialization in pediatrics in 2010 at the University of Bologna.From 2010 to 2014 he held the position of Research Fellow first at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology then at the Department of Medicine and Surgery (DIMEC) of the University of Bologna.In 2015 he obtained his PhD in "Biotechnology of Human Bone Marrow Transplantation" at the University of Perugia.From 2018 to 2021 he held the position of type B Researcher at the Department of Medicine and Surgery (DIMEC) of the University of Bologna.Since 2021 he has held the position of Associate Professor in the disciplinary scientific sector MED 38 Pediatrics at the Department of Medicine and Surgery (DIMEC) of the University of Bologna.

Clinical and health care activities

From graduation until today he has carried out assistance activities in the "Lalla Seràgnoli" Pediatric Hematology and Oncology department of the Policlinico Universitario Sant'Orsola Malpighi.From 2011 to 2013 he worked as a freelance doctor in the Pediatrics department of the Bolzano Hospital – Azienda Sanitaria Locale dell’Alto Adige.Since 2015 he has been a permanent hospital medical doctor in the Pediatrics Unit of Policlinico Sant'Orsola Malpighi.Since 2021 he has been a permanent medical doctor at the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Clinical Unit of the Simple Departmental Structure of Pediatric Oncohematology of the IRCCS Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria di Bologna, Policlinico di Sant'Orsola.

He has participated and participates in numerous national and international groups in the field of childhood hematological disorders and in particular:He is Coordinator for Italy of the European Working Group of Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) in Childhood (EWOG) for the study of myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disorders in childhood.Coordinates the Working Group of pediatric myelodysplastic syndromes of the Italian Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (AIEOP). Member of the Acute Myeloid Leukemia Group and of the Stem Cell Transplantation Group of the International BFM Study Group. Member of the Working Group on acute non-lymphoblastic leukemia, of the Working Group for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapies and of the Psychosocial Working Group of the Italian Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (AIEOP).Member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Society of Pediatric Research (SIRped).

• In 2013, Grant of the European Bone Marrow Transplantation 2013 in London for the study "Favourable Outcome Of Children With High-Risk Aml Treated With Either Autologous Or Allogeneic Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation In The Aieop Lam 2002/01 Protocol"

• In 2012 he received the Caltagirone National Prize from the Umberto Veronesi Foundation for the research project entitled: “Identification Of Common Mutations In Infant Acute Myeloid Leukemia Using Next-Generation Sequencing Methods”.

• In 2010 he received the national award of the Italian Association of Bone Marrow Donors (ADMO) for the best scientific project entitled: "Study Of Non-Hla Genetic Polymorphisms Associated With The Prognosis Of Pediatric Patients Undergoing Transplantation From Non-Consanguineous Donors".

National scientific qualification:

In 2021 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification for the function of first level university professor in the Competition Sector: 06/G1, disciplinary scientific sector MED38 Pediatrics and Child Neuropsychiatry.In 2016 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification for the function of second level university professor in the Competition Sector: 06/G1, disciplinary scientific sector MED38 Pediatrics and Child Neuropsychiatry.

Publishing activity:

Since 2004 he has published many scientific contributions as author or co-author, mainly in the field of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology, specifically in pediatric Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Myelodysplastic and Myeloproliferative Syndromes of the pediatric age and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.In particular, he is author/co-author of 18 chapters of textbooks, more than 200 articles in extenso peer reviewed in journals indexed on Scopus and more than 300 abstracts and posters at national and international congresses for a total H Index of 35 and an Impact Factor total greater than 1000.He plays the role of Associate Editor and participates in numerous Editorial Boards for international journals in the fields of Pediatrics, Pediatric Oncology and Hematology, Experimental Hematology and Medical Oncology.
