Curriculum vitae

Prof. Raffaele Bugiardini's research is mainly focused on women and heart disease, risk stratification, non-obstructive coronary artery disease, coronary spasm, coronary microcirculation and coronary plaque vulnerability. Prof. Raffaele Bugiardini is author of over 200 scientific publications indexed in PubMed and numerous book chapters. His research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, and the European Heart Journal. He is recognised for the fourth consecutive time among World’s Top 2% Scientists List, an academic ranking created by Stanford University, Elsevier, and Scopus. The list identifies the top scholars in their own areas of specialty and whose publications are most frequently cited by other authors around the globe.

Prof. Raffaele Bugiardini has delivered many named international lectures as a Faculty speaker. He is a fellow of many professional organizations, including the American Heart Association (AHA), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). He served on the Board of the ESC, is a past-chair of the Working Group on Coronary Pathophysiology and Microcirculation of the ESC, and a past-chair of the Congress of the Italian Society of Cardiology. He has served as Task Force Member and Reviewer of the ESC Practice Guidelines. Currently, he is nucleus member of the Working Group on Coronary Pathophysiology and Microcirculation of the ESC.

Prof. Raffaele Bugiardini received his medical degree from the University of Bologna, School of Medicine. He postgraduates in Internal Medicine and Clinical Cardiology from the University of Bologna, School of Medicine. The early part of his career was spent at the University of Bologna as Research Fellow of the Italian National Research Council. Prof. Raffaele Bugiardini has served as Research Fellow, at the Cardiovascular Unit, Royal Postgraduate School, Hammersmith Hospital, London. He has served as Head of the Coronary Research Group of the Coronary Care Unit of the Department of Medicine at the University of Bologna.

EDUCATION

Raffaele Bugiardini graduated from the University of Bologna, Medical School with full honors in 1976 and passed the Postgraduate Boards in both Internal Medicine and Cardiology, again with full honors, at the University of Bologna, Medical School in 1981 and 1985 respectively.

APPOINTMENTS

The early part of his career was spent at the University of Bologna as Research Fellow of the CNR (Centro Nazionale delle Ricerche). Then he moved to London, at the Cardiovascular Unit, Royal Postgraduate School, Hammersmith Hospital in 1981, where he worked as Research Fellow. He returned to Italy in 1983 upon his appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and Head of the Coronary Research Group of the Coronary Care Unit of the Department of Medicine at the University of Bologna.

In 1992 he was appointed Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and in 1995 Associate Professor of Cardiology at the University of Bologna. In 1997 he was appointed as Director of the Coronary Care Unit of the Department of Medicine at S. Orsola Hospital (University of Bologna), and in 2001 as Director of the Division of Cardiology at Imola Hospital (University of Bologna). Currently (from 2004) he is Full Professor of Cardiology at the University of Bologna. He served as vice-president (2006-2008) and President-Elect (years 2008 to 2010) of the Working Group on Coronary Pathophysiology and Microcirculation of The European Society of Cardiology, a past-chair of the Congress of the Italian Society of Cardiology (years 2007-2008). He served on the Board of the European Society of Cardiology ( years 2010-2012). Currently, he is a Task Force Member and Reviewer of the ESC Practice Guidelines and nucleus member of the Working Group on Coronary Pathophysiology and Microcirculation of the European Society of Cardiology.

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEES

He served as Coordinator of the academic activities of the XII semester for Medical Science from 1996 to 1999 and as a Secretary of the Dean in the Faculty of Medicine from 1999 to 2001. He served as Coordinator (2000 to 2004) of the CME University Course on “ Risk Stratification and Treatment of Acute Coronary Syndrome ” held by the University of Bologna, Milano, La Sapienza (Rome), Novara, Siena, Tor Vergata (Rome). AWARDS

In 1976 he received the “Vittorio Emanuele II Prize” for the best curriculum vitae in Medicine at the University of Bologna. In 1977 he received the Francesco Schiassi Award of the Society of Medicine of Bologna for the best curriculum vitae. The Laennec Society of the American Heart Association, Council on Clinical Cardiology selected him for presentation of his contributes in 1987, 1989 and 1991.

MEMBERSHIP OF MEDICAL SOCIETIES

He is Fellow of the American Heart Association (from 1987 to present) and Fellow the European Society of Cardiology (from 1989 to present). He is also member of the Italian Society of Cardiology (from 1988 to present) and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (from 1988 to 2015)

SCIENTIFIC COUNCILS AND GRANTS

He was a member of the Council of “Telemedicina (Telemedicine)” of the Italian Government (MURST 20 April 1990). He was among the coordinators of the Project “Programma di assistenza sanitaria attraverso la telemedicina (Health Care through Telemedicine)” of the Italian Government (Ministry of Health–special programs). He was the Local Coordinator of one of the Units of the Project ”Fisiopatologia dell’ Infarto Miocardico (Pathophysiology of Myocardial Infarction)” of the Italian Government (MURST-COFIN 1997). He was the National Coordinator of the Project “The vulnerable plaque” of the Italian Government (MURST-COFIN 2005-2007).
