Research

My research has mainly taken place in West Africa, particularly among Soninke speakers in The Gambia, and in the West African diaspora, in Africa (especially in Angola) and in Europe. The themes of my research can be grouped into three macro areas:

- Anthropology of migration and im/mobility, including the governance of migration and the externalisation of European borders to (sub-Saharan) Africa.

- Legacy of (internal) slavery in Africa and related forms of in/equality and practices of emancipation and mobilization.

- The economic, existential and cosmological significance of uncertainty and potentiality, particularly in the making of livelihoods and Muslim subjectivity.
