Paolo Gaibazzi is a member of the scientific committee of the MoDI (Centre on Mobility Diversity and Inclusion) and had led the Bologna unit of the collaborative project TAIA-Trasnational Aging between Italy and Africa (2023-26). At Bologna, he is also a faculty member of the doctoral programme in Global Histories, Cultures and Politics. He has previously held academic positions in Italy, Latvia and Germany, where he still directs the 'AfroEuropean Frontiers' project at the University of Bayreuth. He has conducted ethnographic research in The Gambia and Senegal, Angola, Italy and Tunisia, specialising in migration and (externalized) migration governance, the legacy of slavery in Africa and the African diaspora, and the meaning of uncertainty and potential in in/formal economies.
