Full Professor (Professore Straordinario, fixed-term appointment) of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the University of Bologna since 1 October 2025, he carries out clinical, scientific, and organizational activities in the field of diabetology and metabolic diseases. His research interests focus on the quality of diabetes care, the appropriate use of technologies for diabetes management, the reduction of therapeutic inertia, and the integration of real-world data in the evaluation of clinical outcomes. His current research activity is oriented toward the development of person-centered care models and the implementation of innovative diabetes care systems at both regional and national levels.
Education
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Bologna in 1987 with highest honors (110/110 cum laude), defending a thesis on the role of microalbuminuria in the early diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy. He completed his specialization in Diabetology and Metabolic Diseases at the University of Parma in 1990. He was awarded national and regional research fellowships in diabetology, which allowed him to begin early clinical and research activities in university and hospital settings.
Academic and Professional Career
Since 1 October 2025, he has been Full Professor (Professore Straordinario) of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University of Bologna (Ravenna Campus), with appointment as Director of the Complex Operative Unit of Diabetology and of the Diabetes Care Program of the AUSL of Romagna.
Since 2007, he has served as Director of the Complex Operative Unit of Diabetology and Metabolic Diseases of the Province of Ravenna. Previously, he held clinical positions as medical officer and attending physician in hospital facilities in the Emilia-Romagna region. In January 2022, he obtained the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) as Associate Professor (second level) in the disciplinary sector 06/D2.
Teaching Activity
He is engaged in university teaching in the fields of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases for undergraduate degree programs and postgraduate medical specialization schools. He has taught in degree programs in Medicine and Nursing Sciences and in numerous advanced university training courses in diabetology at several Italian universities. He regularly participates as a lecturer and invited speaker at national and international educational events.
Scientific Activity
He is the author and co-author of numerous scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals, with a substantial indexed scientific output and significant bibliometric indicators. He has participated as principal investigator or co-investigator in major international multicenter clinical trials and in competitive research projects, including the FIN-ER REWINDER project. He is a member of national and international research groups dedicated to the evaluation of quality of care and technological innovation in diabetology.
Institutional Activities and Academic Appointments
He has held leading positions within major scientific societies in the field of diabetology. He served as National President of the Italian Association of Clinical Diabetologists (AMD) and as President of the AMD Foundation, and has been a member of national and regional institutional boards and working groups in the areas of diabetology, telemedicine, and prescribing appropriateness. He is currently a member of the national board of the European Diabetes Forum.

He actively participates in scientific committees, institutional working groups, and editorial activities in the fields of endocrinology and diabetology, contributing to the development of clinical guidelines, consensus documents, and national standards of care.
