Research Activity

The main research topic are focused on aquaculture, natural fish stocks management, fish products quality and their nutritional properties. Major attention is paid on the following topics:

  • Reproductive biology of aquatic species - freshwater species: tench (Tinca tinca), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), barbel (Barbus barbus plebejus), chub (Leuciscus cephalus), brown trout (Salmo trutta morpha fario), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), african catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii); marine species: tub gurnad (Trigla lucerna), (Umbrina cirrosa), common sole (Solea vulgaris), turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), sharpsnout seabream (Puntazzo puntazzo) and kuruma shrimp (Metapenaeus japonicus); eurhyaline species: seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) seabream (Sparus aurata), European eel (Anguilla Anguilla), Adriatic sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii) and Mediteranean killifish (Aphanius fasciatus).
  • Nutrition of aquatic organisms - identification of the ideal diet for breeders, larvae and juveniles of fresh and marine water species: northern pike (Esox Lucius), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) tub gurnad (Trigla lucerna), seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) seabream (Sparus aurata), European eel (Anguilla Anguilla) and Adriatic sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii)
  • Breeding techniques for aquatic organisms - improvement of aquaculture techniques for freshwater and marine species: European eel (Anguilla anguilla), Adriatic sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii), seabream (Sparus aurata), seabass (D. labrax), tilapia (Tilapia spp.), striped bass (Morone saxatilis) and Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas).
  • Fish stocks and environmental problematics - interaction between freshwater fish populations; evaluation of dynamics of population and their management; restocking programs for endangered species and control of allochthnous species; ichthiogenic maps creation; control of bird predation.
  • Fish products quality - nutritional properties of fish products originating from farmed and wild animals; improvement of dietetic-nutritional properties of trout, sea bass and sea bream meat.
