CATTANI MAURIZIO,

 Place of birth : Parma, Italy,

 Date of birth : December, 30th 1959

 Master in Ancient History (110/110 con lode) at University of Bologna, "PhD" in Archaeology at Istituto Universitario Orientale of Naples.

Associate Professor of Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Bologna since 2014, he is performing the research on several topics of prehistory with particular attention to different regions of ancient world during the Bronze Age.

 Member of IsIAO (Istituto Italiano per l'Africa e l'Oriente), member of Italian Archaeological Mission in Hungary from 1985 to 1993, member of Italian Archaeological Mission in Yemen from 1986 to 1988, member of Italian Archaeological Mission in Turkmenistan from 1990 to 2000 and director of Excavations at Tahirbaj depe from 1992 to 1994.

 

Director of Italian Archaeological Mission in the Sultanate of Oman in 1992-1993 and Member from 1985 to 2012, where he is currently scientific director of the Excavation at Ra's al-Hadd (HD-6).

 From 2001 to 2006 and from 2012 he is director the Italian Archaeological Mission In Kazakhstan, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by the University of Bologna.

From 2011 he is participating to the Italian Archaeological Expedition in the United States with the role of co-director, together with Davide Domenici and Maurizio Tosi, in the excavation at the site of Cahokia (Illinois).

Since 1979 he has participated or directed several Excavation programs and Survey in Italy and he has collaborated in Archaeological Exhibitions. In particular he collaborated since 1983 with the Archaeological Museum of Modena with different projects and particularly on the Computerised Archaeological Map of Provincia of Modena. He was also founder member of the Archaeological Society Archeosistemi srl with collaboration job between 1986 and 1996. Since 2001 he is director of the excavation of Sector B at the Bronze Age site of Mursia (Pantelleria - Trapani) under the supervision of the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage of Trapani (Prof. S. Tusa).

Recently he is co-director with M. Miari of the excavation at Solarolo via Ordiere (2006-2012), a Bronze Age settlement,inside a large program of research dedicated to the investigation of Bronze Age in Northern Italy.

 

Main topics of the research concern the study of social complexity during the Bronze Age, applied in several regions:

- Arabian Peninsula, where during the IV and III mill. We can recognize the formation of arab civilization, founded on tribal structure;

-Central Asia and steppe world, where aside sedentary population were developing the new style of life based on nomadism and metallurgical exploitation;

- Sicily with particular reference to the island environment of Pantelleria, a unique case of structured settlement with monumental defensive wall and burial structures;

- Northern Italy, characterized during the Bronze Age by an impressive demographic increase and by tribal organizations devoted to a well balanced exploitation of resources (mainly agriculture and breeding).

- Sardinia, with famous nuraghe complexes, where the investigation of landscape and settlement pattern offer a unique case of study of ancient social structures;

- Mississippian civilization, where despite che chronological gap (1000-1400 d.C.) we can recognize the emergence of chiefdom linked to the agricultural exploitation and resources collection.

 Among the intensification of research of new methods, he is interested in experimental Archaeology with field application on pottery, metal, textile and cultivation replica carried out in the Laboratory activated near the Bronze Age site of Solarolo.
