Full Professor at Alma Mater Studiorum since 2000, he is Dean of the Computer Science for Management program, where he teaches Human Data Science and Internet Architecture. He is a Member of the Academy of Sciences and the Bologna Institute for Advanced Studies.
He has held prestigious roles, including Member of the AI task force for the Italian Space Agency (2022-24) and Coordinator of the PhD program in Data Science at Alma Mater (2017-18). He was a Visiting Scholar at UCLA (2011-15) and a Visiting Scientist at ICSI Berkeley (1993). In 2024 and 2025, he gave the inaugural speech for the Data Management and AI in Sports course at the CONI Olympic School.
His research focuses on Inferential AI, Data deluge, Medical data, and Heritage data. Since 1990, he has authored over 250 scientific papers, with fewer than 2.5 co-authors per paper. He has received 5 Best Paper Awards, a Microsoft Research Star Award, and a W3C Web Challenge Delegates Award. His h-index ranges from 36 to 43, with 3,160 to 5,200 citations depending on the indexing service. His research on medical data, heritage data, game intelligence, intelligent driving has attracted media attention.
