Full Professor at Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna since 2000. He is the Dean of the Computer Science for Management program and holds the teaching position for Human Data Science.
He has demonstrated high-level academic leadership, notably as the Coordinator of the PhD Program in Data Science at Alma Mater (2017-2018). He is a Member of the Academy of Sciences in Bologna, participated in the AI Task Force for the Italian Space Agency (ASI, 2022-2024), and has significant international experience as a Visiting Scholar at UCLA (2011-2015).
His recent research is on Inferential AI and Data Analysis, with a particular emphasis on Biostatistics and Medical Data (Quantitative Epidemiology) and Cultural Heritage Data. Since 1990, he has authored over 250 scientific papers (co-authors per paper less than 2.5), achieving an h-index of 36 to 45, and over 5,250 citations on Scholar. He has received 5 Best Paper Awards and a Microsoft Research Star Award. His rigorous scientific analyses have often attracted the attention of the international community, including in areas such as: medical data, heritage data, game intelligence, intelligent driving.
