Curriculum vitae

Adjunct Professor in 2017/2018 and Research Fellow since 2018 at the University of Bologna, he is currently an MSCA Fellow at the same University, conducting research in the fields of landscape history and archaeology. His interests focus on investigating the forms of rural settlement after the end of the Roman Period, the city-countryside relationship during the Middle Ages, and the application of GIS tools in these fields of research. Since 2009, he has been coordinating the Landscape Archaeology project "Bassa Romandiola" (Unione dei Comuni della Bassa Romagna, Italy). Since 2017, he has been coordinating the excavation of Zagonara Castle (Lugo, RA), and since 2018, along with Dr. Mila Bondi, he coordinates the Landscape Archaeology project "Archeology at Cervia". Since 2019, he coordinates, with Dr. Michele Abballe and Dr. Michela De Felicibus, the Landscape Archaeology project "Faventia". From 2019, he is the Principal Investigator, along with Prof. Nicola Terrenato (University of Michigan) and Prof. Paolo Maranzana (University of Boğaziçi), of the project "Gabii after the Romans," funded by the Rust Family Foundation. Since late 2019, with Prof. Daniele Bortoluzzi (University of Milan), he is the Principal Investigator of the project "La pineta di Dante: uno studio sulle suggestioni letterarie e paesaggistiche da Dante a Byron e sul paesaggio urbano e rurale ravennate del Trecento," funded by the Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna and the Center for Studies on Northwestern Romandiola. From 2020, along with Dr. Mila Bondi, he coordinates the fieldwork for the preventive archaeology project at the Ex-Caserma Dante Alighieri in Ravenna, resulting from an agreement between the municipality of Ravenna and DiSCi (scientifically coordinated by Prof. Antonio Curci, Prof. Giuseppe Lepore, and Prof. Federica Boschi).

Education

Graduated in Conservation of Cultural Heritage in 2006 at the University of Bologna, he obtained a specialization diploma in late antique and medieval archaeology in 2009, and completed his Ph.D. in History in 2015.

Academic Career

Cultore della materia in Medieval History and History of Settlements and Habitation Systems at the University of Bologna since 2012; Cultore della materia in Medieval Archaeology and Methodology of Archaeological Research at the same university since 2015. After a research grant from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) in 2015 (Climate KIC action) and a post-doctoral research contract at the Geolab of the University of Limoges (France) in 2017, he became an adjunct professor at the School of Letters and Cultural Heritage of the University of Bologna in 2018. Since 2018, he has been a Research Fellow at the Department of History, Cultures, Civilizations of the University of Bologna. In 2021, he was adjunct professor at DAFIST, University of Genoa. Since 2021, he has been an MSCA Fellow at the Department of History, Cultures, Civilizations of the University of Bologna.

Teaching Activities

He has conducted seminars in his disciplines at the University of Bologna and during research periods abroad, including the University of Lyon, Valencia, and Limoges. In the academic year 2017/2018, he taught the course of "Italian Landscape History" as part of the Master's degree in Archaeological, Artistic, and Landscape Heritage: History, Conservation, and Enhancement at the University of Bologna. In 2021, he was an adjunct professor for a GIS laboratory for archaeology at the University of Genoa. In 2023 he taught the course of GIS for Archaeology at the Michigan University (USA).

Scientific Activities

He has participated in numerous national and international research programs, including the research project "Bassa Romandiola. Landscape Archaeology in Bassa Romagna," under the scientific direction of Prof. A. Augenti, where he coordinated survey campaigns (2009-2016) and the excavation of Zagonara Castle (Lugo, RA, 2017). Since 2017, he has been a member of the research project "PAPAGENO," PAysage PAstoral et GENétique Ovine, ecology of pastoral landscapes in southern Europe, coordinated by the GEOLAB – UMR CNRS 6042 laboratory at the University of Limoges. He has been part of the research group of Yale University's project "Elkab Desert Survey Project" (EDSP) in Egypt, under the scientific direction of Prof. John Coleman Darnell. He participated in the PRIN 2010-2011 project "Global History and Archaeology of Rural Landscapes in Italy between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages," coordinated by Prof. Giulio Volpe (University of Foggia), in the research unit of the University of Bologna (Prof. Paola Galetti). He has been a member of the research group of the project "Butrint Archaeological Research Project: The Roman Forum," at the University of Notre Dame (USA), directed by Prof. David Hernandez.

Membership in Scientific and Editorial Committees

Since 2012, he has been a member of the scientific committee of the Center for Studies on Northwestern Romandiola.

Since 2014, he is a member of SAMI, the society of Italian Medieval Archaeologists.

Since 2023, he is a "socio corrispondente" of Deputazione di Storia Patria per le Province di Romagna.
