Curriculum vitae

EDUCATION

2007 Ph. D. in Pharmacology and Molecular Oncology at the University of Ferrara. Dissertation title: “MicroRNA profile of human cancers”. Supervisor: Prof. Massimo Negrini, Ph.D.

2003 Master degree in Biotechnology in Medicine at the University of Bologna (Final Mark: 110/110 summa cum laude). Experimental thesis: “Analysis of the molecular pathogenesis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma by DNA microarray”. Supervisor: prof. Vincenzo Stanghellini, M.D.

 Personal Statement

I have a strong background in molecular oncology, with a specific expertise in the identification of diagnostic or prognostic gene signatures. As a PhD student, I have collaborated with many research groups from different countries performing microarray data analyses. I have been collaborating with prof. George Calin (Houston, TX) and prof. Carlo Croce (Columbus, OH) since 2004, when they published the first papers showing an association between microRNAs and cancer. Then, we developed a microarray for high throughput microRNA expression analysis. I applied our novel technology to the discovery of microRNAs and non-coding RNAs involved in breast cancer and other solid tumors. As a postdoc in Massimo Negrini’s lab, I performed researches on several tumor types identifying molecular signatures useful for diagnostic and prognostic purposes, for tumor phenotypic characterization and for the cancer with unknown primary site-of-origin identification. Thank to my formation (degree, Ph.D. program, bioinformatics courses), I acquired skills in medicine, oncology and bioinformatics. In addition, I successfully administered a project as a PI, collaborating with other researchers and producing several peer-reviewed publications from my granted project.  I have recently obtained an Assistant Professor position at the University of Bologna (Italy), that will permit my independent research activity. I have co-authored more than 80 papers in international peer-reviewed journals (H-index = 37, 16000 citations, according to Scopus).
