If you asked Bruno Scarpa, Professor of statistics in Padua, what I do, he would tell you that I "count the deaths" and he is essentially right. Partly by choice, partly by chance (isn't that how it always is in life?) I found myself working with mortality models (hence the counting of deaths): my main research interests are premature mortality, indirect estimates and the quality of estimates obtained via maximum likelihood. Since coming to Bologna, I have started to focus on life course analysis, which I find extremely interesting (in life one is never finished learning, a cliché, but definitely true).
