Curriculum vitae

Leonardo NANNI COSTA is full professor of animal husbandry at the Department of  Agricultural and Food Science (DISTAL) at the University of Bologna.

Education:

1987 PhD in Animal Science at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Milan;

 1981 Graduated in Animal Production Science at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bologna.

Career History :

2007 October 1st Full professor of Animal Husbandry, degree course in Animal Production Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bologna.

2001 - 2003 Contract lecturer of Animal Husbandry at the Faculty of Economy, University of  Bolzano;

1992 November 1st - Associated professor to the chair of Animal Husbandry, degree course in Animal Production Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bologna;

1991 January 7th - Permanent research Scientist at the Department of Protection and Development of Agrofood (DIPROVAL) of Agricultural Faculty of Bologna University, Section of Animal Husbandry located in Reggio Emilia;

1990 March 1st - Contract lecturer of Animal Husbandry at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of  Reggio Calabria;

1989 May 2nd - Contract lecturer of Animal Husbandry at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Messina;

1987/1988 Grant of 6 months from Italian National Research Council spent at the Research Institute of Animal Production "Schoonoord" in Zeist, The Netherlands;

1986 Grant of 3 months from PhD course spent at the Department for Research on Pigs and Horses, National Institute of Animal Science, Foulum, Denmark.

Research  activities:

From 1987 works in research programmes, supported by the Ministry of Scientific Research and by the Emilia-Romagna Region, focused on:

- effect of pig and cattle transportation on welfare and meat quality,

- effect of the Halothane gene on the suitability of meat to be processed into dry-cured ham ham,

- relationship between meat glycolytic potential after slaughter and the quality of the dry-cured ham.

From 1993 to 1996 scientific co-responsible for the Unit of Animal Husbandry of DIPROVAL of the EU project "Methods of improving pig welfare and meat quality by reducing stress and discomfort before slaughter" - contract AIR3- CT-1992-0262.

From 2000 to 2003 scientific responsible for the Unit of Animal Husbandry of DIPROVAL of the EU project "Minimising stress inducing factors on cattle during handling and transport to improve animal welfare and meat quality" - contract QLK5-CT-1999-01507.

From 2004 to 2006 scientific responsible of a research unit in the national project "Effects of rearing condition on the response to pre-slaughter treatments and on carcass and meat quality of Italian heavy pig (COFIN 2003).

From 2004 to 2007 scientific responsible of a research unit in the project  "Researches on the defects of Parma dry-cured ham" supported by Emilia-Romagna region.

From 2005 to 2008 scientific responsible of a research unit in the project "Identification and characterization of native animal breeds of Emilia-Romagna for their safeguard" supported by the Emilia-Romagna region.

From October 2008 to September 2010 scientific responsible of a research unit in the national project "Evaluation of transport stress depending on environmental condition" (Italian Ministry of Health).

From November 2012 to March 2014 scientific responsible of the national project  "Identification of pork traits related to the processing into PDO products" (Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Policies)

From July 2013  to March 2015 scientific responsible of the project "Application of risk analysis for improving pig pre-salughter conditions and reducing defects on thighs destined to be processed into dry-cured hams

From 2005 is a member of the Technical table on animal at the Ministry of Health in Rome, (Italy) as expert of welfare.

In 2010 was a  member of a Working Group of EFSA (Food Safety Authority - AHAW Panel) producing a scientific opinion on animal transport requested by the European Commission.

From 2010 to 2014 was a member of Ethics Committee for the protection of animals used for experimental purposes University of Bologna.

From 2010 to 2012 was a President of 1st level degree course in Land and Agro-Forestry Sciences at the Faculty of Agriculture and from 2012 to April 2015  Director of the 1st level degree course "Animal production and wildlife management" at the School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine

From 2012 to 2015 was a member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Society of veterinary Science (SISVet)

From 2012 to 2015 he was is Vice-president of the School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine.

From May of 2015 to April of 2018 was Head of the Department of Agricultural and Food Science.  

From 2020 is again the President of 1st level degree course "Animal production" at the dept. Agricultural and Food Sciences of Bologna University.

From 2020 to 2022 was a member of a Working Group of EFSA (Food Safety Authority - AHAW Panel) producing a scientific opinion on animal transport requested by the European Commission.
