Scientific Activity

The research interests of G. Olmi cover the following fields:

  • High Cycle Fatigue and surface treatments for fatigue strength improvement, mechanical behaviour assessment of innovative materials, fracture surface analysis.
  • Low Cycle Fatigue and related design and experimentation.
  • Mechanical behaviour of parts built by Additive Manufacturing (FDM, DMLS).
  • Experimental Mechanics: in-field testing and design of strain-gauge transducers.
  • Machine Design and simulation of pneumatic circuits for automatic machines.
  • Statistics and Design of Experiment: design of extended experimental campaigns and processing of the acquired data.
  • Reliability and Life extension problems.
  • Shaft-hub couplings (interference fittings, screws/bolts, adhesive connections), static and Fatigue testing, tribological studies.
  • Analytical and numerical methods for product optimization.
  • Nondestructive Testing.

G. Olmi is author of over 180 papers published in peer-reviewed International Journals and in the Proceedings of International and National Conferences, including one book chapter (as an international edition).

G. Olmi is co-author of the scientific book “Experimental Stress Analysis for Materials and Structures” (published in May 2015), as a part of the Springer Series in Solid and Structural Mechanics.

Participation in International Research Projects

G. Olmi is a member of the Project Board of the A_MADAM Project (European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 734455).

The main goal of A_MADAM is to contribute to the increase of the application of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies, by the development of design rules, to enhance the mechanical and fatigue properties of AM processed components. In particular, the study is focused on selective laser sintering (SLS). For further details, see https://www.mfkv.kg.ac.rs/a_madam/

The project involves the Faculty of Mechanical and Civil Engineering in Kraljevo (University of Kragujevac, Serbia), the Department of Industrial Engineering (DIN) (University of Bologna, Italy), Studio Pedrini S.r.l (Bologna, Italy), Topomatika d.o.o. (Zagreb, Croatia) and Plamingo d.o.o. (Gračanica, Bosnia and Herzegovina).

In the framework of the project, G. Olmi is in charge of Design of Experiment (DOE) assisted extensive experimental campaigns, to assess the impact on fatigue of several factors, such as the build orientation, machining, post-manufacture heat and surface treatments.

 

Lab Activity

G. Olmi is the person in charge for the Lab of non-Destructive Control Techniques at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Bologna (in Forlì).

 

Didactic Activity

G. Olmi is lecturer of the following courses (170 hours per year):

  • Mechanics of Materials and Structures (First cycle degree programme in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering)
  • Structural Diagnostics (First cycle degree programme in Mechanical Engineering)
  • Machine Design - Module 2 (First cycle degree programme in Mechanical Engineering)
  • Industrial Products Design Methods T - Module 1 (First cycle degree programme in Industrial Design)

G. Olmi has been a member of the Internship Committee for the Course in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bologna since 2011. Moreover, he has been a member of the Commission for Adjunct Professor selection since 2019.

Teaching activity in the course “Design and Industrial Product Innovation”, for young engineers and architects of the Balcanian area, organized by the University of Bologna.

 

Teaching activity in the course “Structural Design by Experiment” for young engineers from Serbia, Bosnia, Albania and Egypt, organized by the University of Bologna.

Moreover, lectures have been given to Ph.D. Students on topics ranging from Design of Experiment to Additive Manufacturing.

 

Activity as Supervisor

G. Olmi has been the Supervisor of two Research Fellows and is currently the Supervisor of a Ph.D. Student.

G. Olmi is one of the Tutors of the Collegio Superiore of the University of Bologna (http://www.collegio.unibo.it/en). He has been the Supervisor of five students enrolled in the Courses of Mechanical Engineeringm Engineering Management and Informatics. In addition, he has been a member of the Didactics Committee since July 2022.
