Keywords: Modern construction; history of construction; seismic vulnerability; performance improvement; built heritage

Research activity in the field of Architectural Engineering (CEAR-08/A) with particular reference to the following topics:

MODERN CONSTRUCTION:

  • Knowledge of the dynamics of the building practice

In addition to the study of the evolution and diffusion of Modern construction techniques, the analysis of exemplary buildings by construction period and designer is addressed, with the aim of grasping the link between the characteristics of modern Italian construction, local technological possibilities and architectural language.

  • Verification and performance adjustment of the built heritage

A direct consequence of the is the interest in the conservation practices of Modern Italian architecture, to protect and enhance the National built heritage; the activity is therefore directed towards the search for tools and operational methods suitable for formulating an assessment of the current status of the building and possible interventions to achieve a performance improvement while respecting the original characteristics.

HISTORICAL MASONRY CONSTRUCTION:

  • Historical construction techniques in load-bearing masonry

In addition to the study of the evolution and diffusion of traditional construction techniques, the analysis of the technological characteristics is addressed together with investigations aimed at identifying the evolution of the building practice in the relationship established with the material culture of the period.

  • Analysis of isolated and aggregated historical buildings aimed at understanding structural behavior in the seismic context

This line of studies aims to identify the transformative processes of historical buildings, as well as the consequent predisposition to damage under the effect of the earthquake. The ultimate goal is to develop a protocol for the rapid assessment of seismic vulnerability that allows planning of risk reduction operations and the monitoring of safety conditions.
