Research support (competitive funding).

He has obtained competitive grants for his research activity from various public and private bodies, including the European Union, AIRC, Fondazione CARISBO, Fondazione Luisa Fanti Melloni and Fondazione Cariplo.

Scientific interests and laboratory activity.

His current research interests are centred on regulatory molecular mechanisms governing stem/progenitor cell expansion and differentiation or mature cell dedifferentiation during physiological tissue renewal/regeneration and cancer development. Part of the research activities are focused on the cardiotoxic side effects of anticancer therapies. He recently uncovered a crucial role for the tyrosine kinase receptor ERBB2 and glucocorticoid receptor (GR) in cardiac development and regeneration.

Laboratory activities are performed at the Centre for Applied Biomedical Research (CRBA, Bologna) and in collaboration with the Interuniversity Consortium Biostructures and Biosystems National Institute (INBB, Bologna) and IRCCS MultiMedica (Milan).

He has published more than 20 publications in peer-reviewed international journals, including prestigious journals (Nature 2018; Nature Communications 2014; Nature Immunology 2012; Nature Immunology 2011). He uncovered a key role for ERBB2 co-receptor in cardiac regeneration (Nature Cell Biology, 2015), which has had a significant scientific and mass-media coverage.

He is co-inventor of a method of potentiating cardiac regeneration with an agent which upregulates activity or expression of ErbB-2 along with neuregulin treatment (“Methods, kits and devices for promoting cardiac regeneration").
