Scientific interests and laboratory activity.

Current research interests are centred on regulatory molecular mechanisms governing stem/progenitor cell expansion and differentiation or mature cell dedifferentiation during physiological tissue renewal/regeneration and cancer development. Part of the research activities are focused on the cardiotoxic side effects of anticancer therapies. 

Laboratory activities are also conducted in collaboration with IRCCS Sant'Orsola, the Interuniversity Consortium Institute of National Biostructures and Biosystems (INBB, Bologna), and the Center for Applied Biomedical Research (CRBA, Bologna).

Publications.

Publication of numerous papers in international peer-reviewed journals, including prestigious journals (Nature 2018; Nature Communications 2014; Nature Immunology 2012; Nature Immunology 2011). Discovered a crucial role for the ERBB2 tyrosine kinase receptor (Nature Cell Biology, 2015) and and the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) (Nature Cardiovascular Research, 2022) in heart development and regeneration, with significant scientific and media coverage.

Patents.

Co-inventor of a method to enhance cardiac regeneration with an agent that increases the activity or expression of ErbB2 along with neuregulin treatment (“Methods, kits and devices for promoting cardiac regeneration").
